There's a major squeek from the passenger side dash, almost a screech. I've removed the cubby hole, had my son ride around with his head in there to pin it down, tried to rattle everything, and nothing is loose or squeeking.

So where's it coming from?

Any ideas? Anyone else experience a squeek from the passenger's side that couldn't be identified and then finally was?

THANKS! It's driving me nuts!

(the dealer couldn't find it either)

I had a VW Scirroco that had what appearred to be a sqeek in the passenger side dash and it ended up being a faulty hinge on the passenger side of the hood. It took months to figure it out because it seemed for certain the sound was coming from inside the dash. I most likely am wrong, but you should grasp your hood near the hinge with the hood closed and see if you have any movement.

Ive seen stress cracks in the drivers side door frame by the door hinge on older rams. Usually goes up towards the windshield, makes a lot of noise. I know you have a snow plow so take a look.

Took mine in for a bad squeek on the driver's side. Told them about the TSB BadArseRam mentioned. They took it in, but it was not the cause mentioned in the TSB. The body guy worked on my truck all day until he finally figured out there was a weld somewhere under the dash that cracked. Once located, he took the entire dash out, mig-welded the crack, put it all back together, charged me nothing (warranty), and then went home -- that was a long enough day for him. All the other body work at that dealer got put off a day.

I have a bad rattle on the RS dash. Always wanted my wife to look for it while I drived, but it would never do it when we were looking. After about a year (over 36K miles) I relized the rattle would go away when I turned off the radio!

Now I am stuck with a rattle, until I find a way to mount the factory amps on the new speakers (or replace the factory amps with something better)

Our 98. 5' and 01' have both developed a high pitched squeek or screech at about 5,000 miles. It is almost inpossible to locate because of the high pitch and location in the dash (sound seems to sound like it is coming from the center or passenger side). After our 98. 5' started it all of us drivers tried to find the source. Nobody had any luck until I noticed it was worse on rough roads in a turn. The source ended up being the 3" long 1 1/2" diameter spring against the firewall on the steering shaft. spray that dude down with white lithium grease every oil change and no more screeches. It seems to be a problem started by pressure washing the engine bay. That is our conclusion. It was easy for us to find the screech in the 01' - been there done it routine.

I have the very same noise, passenger side dash, windshield area? It seems worse on uneven roads. The mentioned recall is the 23-08-99 issued Mar. 99. I tore all the insulation out of that area and even removed the black cowl panel before I read about the recall. This website used to give recalls and the repair procedures for them. Where did that go????? Anyway the recall mentioned unbolting the dash and putting 3m tape behind the sheetmetal portion of where the dash bolts to the cab. I hate to take mine to the dealer and watch some vo-tech graduate dissect my interior, I wish I could find those instructions again.

Doug Hofeldt of Air Bulldog hoods showed me an area that is spot welded at the factory that almost always results in cracked welds, thus leading to mild separation and subsequent noise. This area is located just inboard of the hood hinges where they bolt to the body, just below the cowl area. The verticle spot welded seam on either side is the offending area. The front fenders would have to be removed to weld the effected area. I saw a Ram that had the seams mig welded to correct the problem... end of noise problem. Although the seams usually exhibit good spot welds, the presence of a SMALL amount (AND I MEAN SMALL) of corrosion near each of the spot welds will tell a different tale. EVERY Ram I have checked after this has exhibited the symptoms, including mine.

Good one Axekicker. Been there, done that.

It suddenly went away, then came back sporadically. I think I've narrowed it down to the A/C mounting bolts that run through the firewall. It's worse when it's hot and the A/C has been running stong -- at which point the clamp holding the condenser housing (? that round thing that sweats a-lot bolted to the firewall, in the engine compartment) must contract just enough to cause tension and squeeking. Now that my back is starting to feel better I'll crawl under the hood and tighten those bolts. If that doesn't do it I'm going to perform the TSB mentioned above.
