Torque specs for pin box bolts on 5'er

Fenders for dually

Hey guys,

I am between jobs right now and would like to do some driving to pay the bills. I know some of you guys have talked about towing new camper trailers for cash. What companies do you haul for? Are there other opportunities out to use my truck to make some dough? My truck is described in my sig. Only have a bumper hitch right now, but would be willing to do a gooseneck or 5th-wheel if it would pay for itself. Thanks!

Chris

OK now 3 posts. I just read that they require an 8 foot bed. Doh! Also, you must have the following:

Truck must be equipped with the following. (Pictures of equipment)

a) Class III receiver

Rated at least 10,000 pounds

b) 5th wheel

Rated at least 16,000 pounds

c) Gooseneck hitch

d) Full width mud flaps at rear bumper and wheel flaps

e) Extended mirrors for 102 inch trailers

f) 1,000 pound load distribution bar

g) Credit card to do your own truck repairs (on the road)

h) Torque wrench-rated at 125 lbs

2 deep well 6 point socket sizes:

13/16 & 3/4

i) Electric brakes

j) Appropriate bed plug and bumper plug

k) (4) 27 foot tie down straps 2inches wide. These are used for securing stacked loads.

l) 2 ball sizes: 2" and 2 5/16

m) Electric brake break away battery

DOT requires the battery to be a

"wet" cell battery not a dry cell

Looks like trailer delivery is out for me with the short bed. Maybe I'll research hotshotting smore more. Hmmm...

Just remember, the old adage,"it takes money to make money" really does apply here more so then other areas!! :(

I looked into this not so long ago for a little extra cash. I already had 90% of the equipment needed but after talking to allot of guys doing this I decided it wasn't for me. Horizon is almost 50% deadhead miles so that cuts into profits pretty fast. Backhauls are usually vehicles which most drivers said the price is undercut so much that you make more money sucking up the deadhead miles and high tailing back to pick up another trailer.

It may be for you and you may like it. I would have liked it but I did not want and do not need to do this full time and the pay was not near worth the time on the road and miles on my truck. Oil field hotshotting is another story, looks like great money to be had there but I don't live around any oilfields.

Dude, its called driving for a reason !! The work is not going to magically appear in your driveway and say "here I am, take me to where I need to go" YOU have to go to where the work is. (Interested in selling trailers down your way?)

As I said, I'm not looking to full time haul. I have a job, but if I needed the work full time then I would move to where the money was good... but I don't need to.

EDIT: Driving oilfield hotshot would be nice money and driving all the time would be worth it (yes I get the driving concept) just to be working on your own. However I own my home here and the kids go to good schools and I have a good job so it's not worth moving to oilfield country.

Was not trying to offend about the horizon type of work, it just isnt what I was looking for in a money/time/truck depreciation ratio.

Around where I live. . there is a lot of rv'r. A lot of people are buying their 5th wheel or TT and having them taken over to the coast where they are stored. I have thought about running an add in the local thrifty nickle and see what kind of response I get. My son and I are working toward having my truck setup to pull what ever needs to be pulled... within safety limits.

The run to the coast from here with an rv in tow is about 3 hours and somewhere around 150 miles. . It would be something that him and I could do and also be able to flex the muscles on our truck :-laf :-laf :-laf ...
