Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Pressure Drop

Hi all,

I keep reading all these posts about smokeouts and it bums me out. For the life of me I can't make more than the smallest of puffs (hardly noticeable) no matter how hard I try. Do I need more mods to accomplish this? Normally I like a clean burner but its kinda fun to make a puff of smoke now and then.

Smoke is unburned fuel you get this by adding lots of fuel while at low boosts pressure. Injectors or a box or both will do the trick.

cheers, Kevin

Poor over-valved guys have to buy injectors or a box to smoke someone out. All us correctly valved guys have to do is turn up the star wheel, or take the rack stop out of you REALLY wanna smoke!:D :-laf

There are several ways to do this. With the STOCK Auto you are VERY limited. The best way to do this, and gain a free 60 or so HP is with an EZ Type box. The EZ box will add fuel at low boost, which will do two things for you,,

1. Make some smoke with a Heavy foot.

2. Give the truck alot more "pep" on the bottom end.

If you are not looking for more bombs than 60HP then an EZ type box would be the way to go,, if you are looking for more power in the future, you can go with a more capable, and more adjustable box like the Power Edge COMP, or Drag COMP, more expensive, but twice the HP available when you beef the Auto up. Just don't pierce the pump wire, and it will act Just like an EZ.

The EZ brings up boost to give you two very good things,, more power, and lower EGT's.

The EZ won't tax your lift pump either, but a Fuel Pressure gauge is nearly mandatory with ALL 24V motors,, at the bare minimum a pressure check periodically (say at every oil change)

A stock 24V Auto won't smoke but a small puff,, turn it up a bit, put a "hot" box, big injectors and a big turbo, and you've got a recipe for "Daylight Control".

Hope this Helps,

This is more or less a reply to what "got smoke?" said. Overvalved? I dont suppose if he ever desires a NEW truck that he wouldnt buy a Dodge Cummins. Im sorry but 12 valves are old. More valves-better breathing. Obviously we can make power. Look @ MCUMMINS post. I like the fact the 24 valve doesnt need valve adjustment until 100,000 miles yours is like 50,000. Also they are kind enough to install the heavy duty exhaust valve srings (for use with exhaust brake) You have to install them. Cromagnun man is gone on live technology...computers and boxes are COOL, unless youre my grandpa. Long live the OVERVALVED!!!!!

What's a-matter Joe can't take a joke?

24V's are nice I just would rather get the same amount of power for less. Plus 97 was about as new as I could afford being only 18 when I bought the truck last year!:-laf

Don't take my joke offensively. I just about demand a ride in Briar Hopper's Black Beast whenever I'm @ BMD. Nothing better than an 8,000lbs. -plus dually get'n sideways on dry asphalt!:--) :-laf :D

It certainly is nice to smoke like heck off of one light, then reach down hit a button and be stock off the next light. Especially nice if you accidentally smoked in front of a cop and don't want to antagonize them some more.

I have a friend with the same truck with an Edge Comp. and it will just BARELY smoke at launch. Still trying to figure it out... .

I just asked this question on another thread. I think that airflow is critical to the amount of smoke produced. I just installed DDII's and have a DDTT on 3 and see no smoke. I also have an AFE air filter, boost elbow and straight thru 3" exhaust. I know that I am moving tons more air than I used to so I figure that even though more fuel is added it is "diluted" with air, which is what your engine really wants. Proper air/fuel mixture manages EGT's and gets optimal fuel economy. Higher fuel/air mixtures will produce black smoke. I used to get some smoke with 275's and DDTT with stock airbox @ 20 psi boost but see none since 30 psi and AFE. The AFE moves LOTS of air and sounds great!!

Heck, an EZ will smoke a leetle bit.

For a black fog, set the box to 3,4,or 5x5 then-with NO BOOST- hit the throttle hard and brake at the same time. With a manual it's real easy, take off in 3rd. Just beware that the clutch or tires HAVE to give when the boost comes up.

I practice on the car-chasing dog just up the road. He's a hoot. Sometimes he just stops and stares at the black cloud. He's learning to chase from the LEFT side. ;)
