Is it possible to make the new quiet diesels noisy again? I just don't like a quiet truck, I enjoy combustion noise :)

My curiousity stems from the possibility of purchasing a 2003 or 2004 truck. Have to do research on employee discount first though. But four doors are an appealing factor!

Wait for REAL rear doors.

Twin stacks will give you some exhaust notes, but to get the clatter you'll need to ditch the CR system. Yeah, that's the ticket, put a 7100 pump on it.

Or buy a 97 and be happy. ;) :D That's my plan.

A lot of the 2nd gen and earlier noise came from:

1. injection noises associated with high pressure pulses of fuel

2 the injection pump itself

3. gear lash noises in the external gears.

Those have all been addressed in the 3rd gens. The external gears have increased contact area, the HPCR itself addresses the other two as noise sources. Plus, the pilot injection reduces combustion noise itself.

me thinks your best bet to enjoy cumbustion noises is to straight pipe or aeroturbine. all very doable. you just won't have the under-hood rattle that the others have.

I didn' t know if the injection system could be reprogrammed to get rid of the pilot injection and just do the normal 100% at TDC

that would be a tall order. presumedly a fueling box could do that by intercepting instructions on the bus and issuing new ones, but I don't think you'll find much motivation in the industry to do that. The pilot injection improves the burn as well, so HP wise its a benefit. emissions and smoke control would go to pieces and the current state of the art is not favorable to that.

The 2nd gen HO engines are probably your best bet to maximize the diesel rattle from the hood (as opposed to the tail pipe) and HP. Get an Edge Drag comp box, put in stage 2 injectors, a good exhaust system , intake system, and an HX 40, and you're good for lots o' smoke and rattle.

This is all hipothesizing right now anyway.

I currently have a '95 2500 but wanting another truck this coming year. I can purchase a new one under emp. discount but I'm not sure it will be enough discount to actually buy a new one or not. And like someone has mentioned the new 4doors aren't as big as I thought they would be.

Go modified!

I don't have a modified exhaust yet but I have heard a few and really like the sound.

As far as the four doors go, mine are just right for me and my boys, 5 and 8. At 5'11" I have sat back there when my wife was driving and the leg room is OK. The seat could have a little more slant to it but overall it makes for a nice compact package. With the mountain driving we do in the summer I like the setup and the short wheelbase. This truck will maneuver very well as is. If you like that "driving a bus" feeling then the crew cab long bed setup may be worth the wait.

Ah! You brought up a good point. No long bed in the 4door format yet! I have to have my long bed. I have got so accustomed to my long bed that I really like it. I love having the room to put many things in the back.

I think that just made up my mind. I'm going to look into a 2000-2002 truck, extended cab, 2500, 4wd, long bed

i am tired of hearing all of this crap about the back seat issue. if you want a land bus buy a ford if you want a good turning radius and just right size back seat buy a Dodge. now the back seats on the 94 to 2002 just down right suck! my dad is 6-2 and he fits in the back seat of my 03 without a problem. what else do you need? would i buy a truck if it had a larger back..... yea but the size it is now is enough not huge but enough. should it be bigger maybe alittle but it would not make a huge d/f. my truck fits in my garage with my tool chest infront on the truck. no romp romp b/c i dont have to leave my truck outside in the cold weather.

as far as the sound the 98. 5-02 sound rediculous with all of that clatter. never heard a diesel in my life clatter that much at idle i had a 99 and that is a main reason i got rid of it. now the 98. 4 down sound much better. i am having a bad day and already have my flame suit on... . fire away. :p

atta boy!:D

There's a sweet one in AZ right now with 34k on it. see classifieds.

Don't care what fits back there, the doors look silly. :p

clatter clatter clatter. love it.

Want noise on a 3rd Gen? Unplug the cam sensor! That will give you plenty of noise. It will boost fuel pressure all the way up, I just wouldn't run it for very long.

Amen Catcracker!

My . 04 cents:

I tried to say it a little nicer but land yacht did come to mind when I was describing the Ford Crew Cab.

The clatter of the Dodge is definitely sweeter than the Ford but I am of the opinion that quiet is better. Who cares how the engine sounds when you have a nice throaty exhaust to bark at the trespassers with?

Sorry if I steered you wrong but the 4-door Dodge is definitely available in a long bed. It's still not a land yacht:p

CATCRACKER Whew! Straight Talk for sure. You need your own radio show!

I have sat in the back seat of my 2004 and, sure there could be more room, I'm almost 6' and there was plenty of room for me.

TAZIf you want a noisy one, call Lewis Chrysler Dodge Used Vehicles in Fayetteville, AR. I just traded in a very noisy 2002 2500 with 46,000 miles on it. So noisy you couldn't sneak up on a dead person in the cemetery. I was mistaken for the school bus several times in my neighborhood.

i have said since the new diesel came out ---

if i could have bought a 24v non-cr with the new body and all of its great features, (bigger rear seat, better track-bar,etc)

I would have paid much more for that truck...

I miss the easy power, comp+dd2+turbo of your liking = more hp than I need :D

roger that. on the flip side, the VP44 wasn't as reliable as hoped, and in this case, the fueling box will control injectors directly so won't introduce any component stress as the comp box did for the VP44.

I've got my hopes up for "just as easy" power with the 3rd gens, only easier than the 02s. guys with the bullydog box are pushing 400 HP now with just a box and exhaust, stock turbo. I'm suspicous that we'll be able to change the turbo (piers already has a bolt on solution), which means that power bombs will actually be easier with the 03. We already know they respond well to injectors, so I think we'll be easily pushing 500 HP with injectors, box, and turbo, whereas with the 02 this was much more difficult.

Cat ker,

It's to bad that you don't want to here about other peoples grips over the back seat/rear doors. It happens to be a legitimate gripe, and one that alot of Dodge and fellow Cummins owners would like to get fixed. Who else can you compare too?? Chevy?? they have a true 4-door crew cab to offer there customers. Ford?? they two have a true 4-door crew cab to offer to there customers?? Even Toyota has one. If you are fine with the current offering from Dodge, then I think that is wonderful. I am truly happy for you, and wish you nothing but the best. But don't tell the rest of the buying public to not voice our gripes about the way two small rear seating area, and it's doors. Yes the previous models with the CLUB CAB, or EXTENDED CAB as it is better known, did have a small rear area. And yes it was hard for a large kid, or adult to get in and out. But, the people that bought them new they were buying a CLUB CAB, and yes they new it had no back door, or on some models a small backward opening door. The difference is that Dodge, is trying to market this new generation as a full size pick-up with a CREW CAB. It is not a full size CREW CAB. It you are fine with it then good, and if there are a few others that have bought in to the marketing campaign and think of it as a full size crew cab, then good for you. The rest of us will voice our displeasure to Dodge through this forum till they get it right, and if you are tired of hearing about it they to BAD. You can choose to not read certain post, read them but keep your trap shut, or not visit this site, see you have that choice. We are trying to get Dodge to listen, so we might enjoy a choice ourselves.

not to poke my nose in someones elses business, but dodge never marketed the ram 4-door as a "Crew-cab" - as you can see by the sticker, the model is a "ram 2500 Quad Cab" - the term crew cab came from consumers that mis-label the new truck,

I have talked extensively with chrysler reps, and the general rule is that the cost to built a true "ford-like, crew cab" would be too high in relationship to the amount of expected sales that they would gain...

y-knot - just as catcracker has a choice not to read post, etc, you have a choice not to buy/own a new 4-door dodge,

the fact that we post on this board that the true crew cab is a wanted option is of little importance to the big-wigs at diamler-chrysler, they have known for YEARS that ford and chevy BOTH make that cab. - but until "we" (the general passenger public) STOP buying new rams (which buy the way, ram sales are up way past 99-2001 figures) , they will not see any reason to produce that cab. too much cost for too little profit

wow, i need a darn soda
