I had a problem with my tire holding air so I replaced the valve stem and looked the tire over real good and no nails or anything well I came out one morning and she was flat as a doornail and I aired it up and thats when I discovered that the alum rim had a crack in it I couldnt believe it. I never beat on my truck at all, I took it to the dealer and they are ordering me a new rim but how cheap are these rims? Has anyone had this happen to them thanks alot!

It might be tough to buy just one since it would break up the set, but they aren't that much $ in the used marketplace. I'm scoping some to put on my '98 to handle bigger tires and I'm finding complete sets from wheel and tire dealers in the $250 - $300 range. On tire dealer said new their cost is about $195 each.

I had an old MG back in high school with aluminum racing rims that did the same thing. One day I went out to the garage and the tire was completely flat. I found a six inch crack in the rim.

I had one on my truck develope a crack around 20K. Went to the dealer and showed him the spot on the rim where the crack was and he gave me a funny look like "there's not crack". I then said to put some water on it at which time he asked how many miles and then it was off to the parts desk to order a new one.

Jumped a 4' ditch with aftermarket wheels (no not on purpose:p ).

Bystanders said we where over 6' in the air!!! (this was in a 92 4x4 ctd) We ended up with broke front leaf springs (the 4500lb ones), bent frame (hunch back  ), front axle bent very very bad,

the wheel wells where bent from the tires hitting them, cracked the stereo face & the front windshield, bent the seat (hey why are you laughing), & sore backs. But the wheels where fine & we drove it home!!! All this to miss a very ... ... ..... (foolish driver)

who ran a stop sign. If the wheels would have broke the truck would have landed on it's top & we would have been hurt (if not killed) very bad. So it's just my 1mil to buy better wheels if your current ones are cracking just from nomal driving.

By the way he still has the wheels & drives on them everyday to work. They balanced 00 with the goodyears he put on them without any weights.

When my truck was brand new and I was washing it for the second time, I noticed what looked like a crack at the edge of oval opening. This wasn't something that would cause a leak, but could result in a rim failure if it probagated. I tried to make sure that it wasn't something that caused the clear coat to give the appearance of a crack. I drove it for another short trip and it seemed to grow. That could have been my imagination. I went to the local dealer. They looked, called the manager, and couldn't say it was a crack or not. They sent me to the tire shop of my choice and said that they would go with what the shop said. The tire shop couldn't say for sure but it could be a crack. I went back to the dealer and told them and they replaced the rim without any further question. I explained that I use the 4X4 a lot and really didn't want to chance it. I always look at the rims when washing the truck. I've had sand tires on alumimum rims that couldn't keep air over night, so  beware.
