Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Manifold "stretching"

Someone please explain this problem again. How do you determine if this is a problem? Is it the exhaust manifold?

Typically it shrinks instead of streches.



To see if yours has shrunk over time, stand by your passenger side tire and look directly on at #1 cylinder top exhaust manifold bolt. Does it appear to be in line with the head, or is it off to the left some?



If its shrunk you may want to consider replacing with a 3 piece manifold like the one ATS sells.

at the very least, I would release the tension on the bolts and then re-torque. this will relieve the stress on the cylinder head exhaust ears. The front cylinders like to crack due to the design of the head.

Take the 2 bolts/studs out of either end , use a die grinder / what ever , & make oval holes , side to side [ not up & down ]
about 1/8 " , this will help keep the manifold from cracking , nothing for it to pull against .

So, the evicence of the crack is pretty obvious? As in the sound of a major exhaust leak?

I could be , but all manifolds do not crack the same or all at once , it may start out small , hard to see , left alone it could become a large crack .
I've welded up a lot of exhaust manifolds .
There are a few companies that make 2 & 3 piece man. so that they can expand & contracted .
