Multiple vehicles

NVR FNSH,

Not all of us have the luxury of multiple vehicles. I have to move every 1 to 3 years. I need the best compromise between good towing (boat) and all around other use. I set careful limits for use of truck offroad due to extreme axle weight. Takes the BIG wrecker to pull one of these out if really buried! When I am done serving my country my toy collection will grow and I can settle down, my toy collection will grow.

araiha,

My comments were meant tongue-in-cheek - mostly:) There are valid reasons/places for our trucks to be seriously used - look at EarthRoamer or the Turtle Expedition. Not gonna do that with my CJ. I just find it amusing that some guys are taking their full size trucks places where a CJ is going to sustain body damage trying to squeeze thru the trees & rocks. I've had my CJ since my junior year in HS - 1987; can't seem to let it go after all these years.

NVR FNSH, Yep I'm one of those guys squeezing my truck chaing the jeeps here in CA. Sometimes the wheelbase is a plus and sometimes not. On Dave Fritz's web page has some pictures of my truck and the damage I've done to the rocker guards. Sometimes it can't be helped and hopefully my new rocker guards will protect the cab

Tom,

I am running behind on my email but doing better at keeping up with the forum. Thank you for sending the photos and side bar measurements. I am still measuring on my truck to see what modifiactions I need to do to fit a similar set of bars.

For others, Tom's truck is here .

Dave

Cool pics Tom. But I must say it's much easier & cheaper to fix the rockers on my Jeep:D That, and I wash it with a ScotchBrite - it's the only way to get the greasy handprints off the rockers.....

Also, short of breaking something, I've never seen a manual hub lock fail to engage or come unlocked when you need it most.

Two stories on this:

Many years ago after a heavy Seattle snowfall I called a friend (Mike) to come and get me. He called back and said that something was wrong with his Blazer. The front end was not locking and he couldn't move with only 2WD. I finally got to Mike's place to help fix the Blazer. Mike removed the cover from a locking hub and started poking in the hub area. I took a quick look and saw that everything looked good. I picked up the hub cover, wiped out a big hunk of ice, handed it back to Mike. I told him to use more grease on the o-ring to keep the water out. Quick check of the other hub for ice (none) and we hit the road.

My brother had an old Willys Jeep. One of the hubs split. Luckily, He caught it in time and used a steel backing plate to hold things together until he got a new set.

Nothing is fool proof.

Not a problem Dave. Maybe I'll have some more wheeling pics for ya. I'm heading for Superstition to do a run tomorrow and check out the rocker guards and how my front axle likes a Detroit with 35's now:confused: Can I borrow your Dana sometime;) Just to see how she works. Hopefully you can get something that works for ya. If ya want I can do the measurements (detailed ones) and you could probably make your own if ya got a MIG. I bought my MIG after I ordered the rocker guards:(

NVR FNSH PLEASE don't tell me how easy it is to modify a Jeep:) My buddy Don has a TJ and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting about 400 companies that don't make a doodad for it. We've done all kinds of stuff to it, custom dana 44 axles with detroits (gonna probably get a free deal on an Ox cable locker for a magazine shoot :( ), Rubicon 5" lift with a long arm kit we just put in, 35 GY MTR's, 4:1 transfer case kit, and th list goes on and on... . I wish we had the same options:( Everyone here even in CA say "You aren't REALLY gonna wheel that thing are ya????" My only claim to fame was making it into Petersen Fourwheel and off road in July 00 at the Ram Jam:( And the confused look on the face of people at the "Regular" 4X4 shops who tell me I can't run a detroit in the front because it will cause the steering to pull, the frontend to gernade, the front driveshaft to explode, young women and children to be abducted by aliens and the best "How are you gonna get it to turn on the pavement" (still haven't figured THAT one out yet :) ) Thanks to Jeff at MIT none of the above have happened in 30K:)

BTW can't wait to go to MOAB!! Wheelbase and torque are a bonus there:)

Take care all.

Tom

Well I had a blast at Superstition and pretty much cleaned alot of paint off the rocker guards, however they worked really good! Only managed to hit the body twice and it was minor and mostly my fault (shouldn't have really been there trying to do it in the first place). Actually had the truck to the point that I had to use my arm to keep it from tipping into the rocks:) I was surprised that this happened because the angle wasn't THAT bad but, I guess with as much weight as I have on the front (pointing down hill) I need to expect it. The Yoko's worked really good but the tread got tore up pretty good on the edges compare to the BFG's I had before. I would up running a lower pressure than I normally would have (18 rear and 20 front) because at the begining of the run I had to winch a Suburban and new F150 up a sand hill and the Dodge was sinking in the sand.

These two boneheads decided to take two stock vehicles and go down a steep sand hill for no apparent reason and got stuck. They couldn't continue on and couldn't make it back up the hill. The only way to get them out to where they could get home was the way they came. Luckily the Dodge was there because the Jeeps (they all were) didn't have enough weight to bring them up. So I dragged them up (Ford boy didn't know about low range and had paper plates:confused: and the Burb wouldn't get on top of the sand so I had to drag it up on the frame:( ) and got them out of the way.

The rest of the trip was alot of fun with people who didn't know me asking is THAT Dodge gonna fit thru there? And yes it did :)

The only gripe I heard was about the DIESEL fumes

:)

At the very end there was a GIANT sand dune and everyone was wondering how I would do on the sand after my winching ordeal (none of the jeeps would try). So I put the PM3 on 9 in 4lo and 5th gear and gave it heck. Well I climbed to the top of the dune and did a roost at the top and came back down. I could actually FEEL the truck get up on plane (like a boat) and smiled.

I forwarded pics to Dave Fritz (no sand dunes:( ) and don't know if he has server room for them but he knowes better than me.

If anyone wants pic's let me know.

Tom

That was on the waterfall at the end of Upper Helldorado. It was taken from a video made by 4x extreme video magazine, I'm waiting for the video to come out. The other pic (on the link) was taken on the Independence trail near Penrose, CO.

Pete

TJ - you say you were in Peterson's? Your's wouldn't be the red 3/4 ton that had the front tires in the air would it? If so, you're NUTS! #ad

Cool pic's, but I don't think my 35's are quite tall enough:)

Yep I made it in Petersen Fourwheel and off road in July 00 at the Ram Jam. They had a picture of me front the rear trying to squease thru a tight spot (didn't make it) with the caption "This is why you don't see many nice full size rigs on the trail". I had also rolled a tire off the rim but they didn't print it.

Nope that wasn't me in the red Ram. I saw that one and it looked like a Axle waiting to happen. I try to be very careful (relatively) when it comes to the front axle. Stock we are only about 600 #'s from the axle limit and with my bumper and winch I'm alot closer. I've watched alot of people scatter stuff and roll using the "Hit the bottom of the hill on the rev limiter and don't lift till ya see God method" For folks like that I just think "Just because your on your own doesn't necessarily (sp?) mean that your should be!"

Tom

Ah, come on, that Jeep in the background on the first pic is on 35s! I just talked to him tonight, he said he picked up the video and its pretty good. He managed to roll on the entrance to that trail.

Pete

I thought the same thing when I saw the red truck in there - I'll have to dig through my old issues to see if I can find your pic. I was in Peterson's a couple of times in articles on the Silver Lake Sand dunes here in Michigan. It was before I had my Cummins though - it's a pic at the top of test hill and I'm in the bed of my '94 GMC Sonoma leaning against the cab - my best friend is parked right next to me in his teal '67 Bronco. I can't wait till the day that I have a pic of my Cummins on the dunes in there!!
