When I was first started looking for my 2003 last May, I was set on an HO/48RE (auto) since every Cummins I had in the past was mated to an automatic. However, just before giving the dealer the go-ahead to go get the HO/48RE, I changed my mind and had him locate a HO/6-speed. When I took delivery of the new truck I thought it was geat. However, about 4 months later, all the shifting started getting to me. I thought long and hard about what to do and while I didn't want to spend the money to correct my error, I did it and would do it again. Now I have a 2004 HO/48RE and couldn't be happier. The way I look at it is, you live and you learn. Although some lessons are more expensive than others.

Hi Ryan,

I finally got around to buying your old manual truck:cool: ,well this coming weekend anyway! Can't wait:D

We run class 7 trucks making local fuel oil deliveries. Stop & go all day & night around a hilly town. In 1979 we bought our 1st. automatic trans. An Allison automatic tied to a Cat desel. We will never go back to stick. Easier on the drivers, better productivity, (they don't have to expend the time and energy to shift down when going around corners or up hills) and no maintainence other than occasional fluid & filter changes. Have 48RE in 2003 Dodge CTD. Very satisfied. Now, if Dodge would only apply better headlights!

I traded my '03 SO 47RE for a '04 HO 6-speed. The '03 was the first truck I ever owned with an auto trans and after three months I went back to manual. I guess it comes down to personal preference but the 6-speed tows much better in my opinion. The low 1st gear is great for crawling around as well.

I personnally have heard no complaints about the 48re.

Good Luck!

Yeah some people are never satisfied

Myself included

My 96 had the 47re and I had griped about the following

; it kept pulling at stop signs/red lights,no braking assistance, would not kick down promptly when I needed it to,blah blah blah.

My 02 has the 6 speed and my 8 mile- 45 minute commute is a lot of rowing to get going. It is especially ruff when I am trying to drink coffee and talk on my cellphone at the same time-steadily rowing the 6 speed. It takes a lot of work to keep up with fellow commuters off the line. But it seems they are not willing to hang with me at 20 or 30 over the posted limit once we get moving:)

If you are only going to tow 7 k there is nothing wrong with the auto. Enjoy. :)
