I just bought a Jacobs brake and it comes with a dash mountable rocker switch to activate. Has anyone put their own switch or know where I can get a gear shift mountable "push / pull" type switch that can be used for manual activation?

I have a BD switch I bought about a year ago with the pac. After a year of dirt roads and some off roading, the switch makes a pretty good rattle. I've seen this on others as well. The cheap fix is putting a rubber band around it. In this dry climate the rubber band lasts about a month, then dry rots off. Anyone else got a fix? Oh btw, I wouldn't even bother with the dash switch. The other switch might be for the 2-low kit.

Take off the rubber band, and through the asparagus in the trash.

Now, that is a rubber band that will last several months.
 
I have a rubber O ring off a 3. 9L waterpump, it fits perfectly and has lasted a long time, the guy that gave me the idea has had the same O ring on his shifter for years and it is still in good shape. If anyone is interested I can get the part number.
 
Jake Brake Info needed

Hello everyone. Just joined TDR on the purchase of 2001 3500 Quad 6spd. Will use to pull 36 ft. 5th wheel which we are in process of getting. Have already picked up useful advise on weaknesses in the Rams(steering wander-have just ordered the DSS to prevent and correct that).



I'm now wondering about an exhaust brake. Is this a must have when towing with a manual trans ? Small print in Dodge towing guide recommends for over 10000 lb towing. I'll probably be running around 12000. If so, is one brand better than another?

And whats with the on&off switch. When would you want it turned off if you had one?



You may correctly assume that I am clueless regarding trucks and particularly diesels !! :D

Exhaust brake

We pull a 30' 5th wheel (12,000 lbs. gross) and have the Jacobs Exhaust break. Of all the add ons that I have, it is the very best decision that I made for my truck and worth the money. We tow the mountains of Colorado but I still use it to slow down the rig here in town and save wear & tear on the brakes. There are alot of different brands but I am real happy with Jacobs e-brake. Hope this helps.

Stan, welcome to the TDR. If you tow heavy at all, I would recommend an exhaust brake. Which brand is best is a BIG question. I have a pac brake. One that has been on the market a long time and one that most fit my budjet at the time. Either brand you choose, you will thank yourself everytime you descend on a mountain pass that you bought one. As stated above, they are usefull when empty as well on off ramps and such. Also, they can be turned on at idle to warm the engine sooner when in colder climates. Enjoy your new truck and do your best to avoid that in-curable disease known as 'bombitits'. :D
 
OH TIMMY TAYLOR... is that the one off Blairs rig..... [what an eye, btw I didn't go to the link to cheat LOL]... on closer inspection that isn't Blairs. . his is a custom triple clamp type [like a y] and very clean

I used a MICRO toggle in the dash wired with a small LED so I know when it's on when the radio is crankin' .
 
The Gear splitter MFGs have a shifter mounted push/pull switch also that is the same as the exhaust brake uses along with mounting bracket.
