I plan on changing the trans fluid in my 01 CTD 5 speed. I am assuming it is a NV4500(not NV3400) and I have heard it takes 4 quarts. What lube have you guys had the best luck with? Any trans fluid change info would be a big help. Thanks

Dave

Royal Purple, can't remember the name of the transmission fluid. O'Reilly's carries it in stock (or should). Put it in my six speed about 90,000 ago and it still shifts great.

Trent

Amsoil makes an excellent manual transmission lube as well. I noticed a slight improvement in shift quality after I swapped to the Amsoil... not as notchy, and the improvement was more pronounced during colder weather. While you're under there, get some transfer case fluid and change 'em both.

My vote (in order of preference)

Red Line

Amsoil

Royal Purple

Redline and Amsoil both have a hi temp viscosity close to or better than the original spec. Royal Purple seems to fall off when it warms up.

IIRC, Redline had the best shear strength. Any of the three are good stuff.

the 4500 and 5600 have different lube requirements don't they?

Supposedly. Also you aren't to put anything but the factory-recommended fill in. But the oil makers recommend the same lube for both.

Thanks a ton for the feedback. I think at this point, I am going to give the Amsoil a shot. Which oil are you slap shifters using, Syncromesh(MTF) or the manual trans gear lube(MTG)? Thanks again.

Dave

That's what I was wondering. The 5600 require the MTF, I thought the 4500 needed something more heavy like gear oil. I'd look into this some more. Maybe I'm thinking of the older manual transmissions.

My understanding is the NV4500 takes the (Amsoil) MTG in a SYN 80/90 weight and the NV5600 takes the (Amsoil) MTF SYN 5/30?. . ?? At least that is what there supply book says. Anyone else care to chime in?

Are you sure about that? The NV-4500 takes a 75W-90 and the NV-5600 takes a 20W.

For the NV-4500 I suggest Royal Purple MaxGear 75W-90 and for the NV-5600 I suggest Royal Purple SynchroMax. I my readers rigs photo session I have a photo of some of the OEM oil if you want to see a disgusting, jelled mess.

I have run mucho miles with R P oils in both gear boxes and have had nothing bu stellar performance.
