Tougher shifts are probably not due to the GL-5 rated lube. I had Red Line GL-4 in my trans for a while. I noticed it was tougher to shift too. I now use Amsoil Series 2000 75W90, its a GL-5 lube. It shifts real smooth. Royal Purple is a very good lube too. I once had an oil analysis done with 5000 miles on Royal Purple 15W-40. The wear metals were LOWER than Amsoil 15W-40 with the same mileage. Tough Oil.
Some lubes just seem to be smoother than others. Red Ram explained it well
