I recently change out my trans lube using Mobil 1 synthetic, API 5; this was shown as compatible in Autozone computer. I could not locate the recommended Castrol Syntorq. With about 3000 miles on this lube, gear engagement going into 3rd is not as smooth as it was. I've got a couple questions. Did I use a lube that I should not have used? If I change it out, will I reverse the effects? What's the best lube to use? Thanks for responses.

I'm going to take some guesses here due to lack of information about your truck. If you have the NV4500 5 speed, the Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil 75W90 API GL5 rated transmission oil should not affect the shifting in a negative manner in only 3000 miles. The Castrol Syntorq LT is a GL4 rated oil, meaning it has less additives than a GL5 for wear protection. The GL4 spec is present as there is some evidence to suggest that using a GL5 additive package intended for differentials in a manual transmission with soft brass synchronizers will cause some plating out of the additives (phosphorus component to be exact) causing poor synchro function.
I work for Royal Purple Inc. We manufacture synthetic lubricants. I have safely used our synthetic MaxGear 75W90 API GL5 rated gear oil in my NV4500 now for 5 years and 100,000+ miles. We formulate with a very thermally stable synthetic additive package that does not have the inherent problems found in less expensive mineral GL5 rated oils.

I would tend to believe that Mobil formulates with above average additive technolgy and that this should not be a problem.

Royal Purple should be available in your area. Check at www.synerlec.com for the nearest retail outlet carrying our product. Should retail for 7. 95 to 8. 95 a quart.

If you want the Castrol product but do not want to pay 26 / qt from DC / Mopar - go to a GM dealer and get the oil for the same NV4500 as used in a Checy truck. Should be about 13 / qt.

Feel feel to page me at 800-206-1523 if you would like to discuss in more detail.

Thanks

Believer,

Tougher shifts are probably not due to the GL-5 rated lube. I had Red Line GL-4 in my trans for a while. I noticed it was tougher to shift too. I now use Amsoil Series 2000 75W90, its a GL-5 lube. It shifts real smooth. Royal Purple is a very good lube too. I once had an oil analysis done with 5000 miles on Royal Purple 15W-40. The wear metals were LOWER than Amsoil 15W-40 with the same mileage. Tough Oil.

Some lubes just seem to be smoother than others. Red Ram explained it well #ad

Red Ram, Why did Royal Purple stop sponsering Shelly Andersen in NHRA T/F?
