A while back I rebuilt the 3-4 synchro in my '98 Jeep. It's an AX15 and everything was working ok after the rebuild except for a leak that developed. I noticed it dripping from the bellhousing. So anyways, I got around to dropping the transmission today (hey it's only been leaking for 2 years!), and it looked like it was leaking around the main input shaft seal. In moving the transmission around, I noticed there was quite a bit of play (maybe 1/8 to 3/16") at the end up the input shaft, like the front main bearing was worn out. Unfortunately in order to press the bearing off the shaft I had to take the whole &#*$ transmission apart. Well, the input shaft "floats" on the end of the 3rd gear shaft and it seems like there's some play in there too. I don't remember it being this loose last time I had it open. I plan to replace the main bearing, the seal, and a couple snap rings while I'm in there. The thing is, the roller bearing that the input and 3rd gear shafts interface on doesn't appear to be orderable, so I'm going to have to risk it and just leave the old one in there. Anyone see a problem with this?

Interesting thing number two... The input shaft has an oil passage that gets covered when the input bearing is pressed on. There's no way oil could flow through there. So could this be because they used to use a non-sealed-clean bearings on the input shaft years ago and when they changed bearing designs they just didn't change the shaft process? Or should there be a hole in the inner bearing sleeve that lines up with the oil passage so that oil gets slung through the bearing? I was thinking about drilling my own hole in the new bearing and see if it lasts longer, but that's a $60 mistake if I screw up... or more if it grenades other things in the process.
