Hey All,

Tried looking in the archives with no luck but have a question. I have a 98. 5 5 spd with a PM3, K/N, and straight exhaust and all of a sudden I have a "Check Engine" light all the time. It has reset once but came back on after about 15 miles. Just so everyone knows I've been running PM's for about 2 years (PM2 then PM3) with no problems. The PM3 has been in for about 1 year and 15,000 miles. The truck has about 58,000 on it now. I have noticed a slight loss of power and surging going down the freeway weather the box is on or off and wondered if maybe the Map Sensor has given up the ghost. Does anyone know a way to test it or how much one costs??

Thanks

Tom

Good possibility. The K&N filters are hard on the Map sensors. I have about the same setup you do and the same mileage and I have put in two. But the second one I put in didn't fix the problem and I finally took it too the dealler and they found an error code and it turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor. The Map sensor is about $40 from Cummins and the TPS is only available from Dodge and it is about $300. A cheap and easy way to see if it is the MAP sensor is to buy a resistor of about 40-60 Ohms and unplug your map sensor and put the resistor in the plug connecting I think it is the orange and gray wire. As you look at the plug with the little plastic lock at 12 o clock it should be, as you look at it, the top right and bottom wires you connect. Try that and turn off the PMax while it is in there and see if the problem goes away. As for the resistor what it does is trick the computer into thinking it is reading boost all the time. So more resistance=more boost. I think 70 ohms is the limit but that should give you full fueling all the time.

Yeah, all the same stuff Keith said happened to us as well. Good Luck!!

Do you have gauges? And if so what kinds a readings are you getting? Gauges are invaluable in these types of situations. Have you pulled the fault codes?

Don't guess at what the problem could be,you'll just end up wasting money that way.
Get a scan-tool hooked up and find out what set the code.
