Marine Cummins in boats

Thanks, TDR Staff

How much did you spend last month?

How long should I let my oil drain?

Just a quick question for the vast TDR out there. I know that Cummins makes marine engines. But do they make a small horse power engine for sailboats. like a 4BT in the 70 hp range or even a 3BT. Do they make a 3 cylinder marine? All of the 4BT's I've seen have horse power over one hundred. It needs to be very miserly on fuel. Anyone know anything about one? Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

I know they make a 4bt at 130 hp, and I believe they make a natural that might be around 100 hp.

Check online at the Cummins web site... or better yet check out

www.boatdiesel.com and look up the specs there.

The issue with a Cummins 4bt is vibration at idle.

(Yanmars are smoother... and much lighter and they make lots of small hp engines... but you didn't ask that, just throwing that in).

Just checked boatdiesel... . Cummins offers a 4b 3. 9M natural rated at 75 hp@2500 rpm. Might be what you're looking for

Hope this helps.

JLEONARD,

Thanks for the sites.

Couple things wrong with yanmars, first they are high rpm diesels. second, they are built with light weight materials. They are not bad on fuel but then again so is the westerbink in there right now.

Yes Westerbeke's have very pricey maintenance and repair parts also... I have one of their older 2 cyl gensets. Runs great, but pricey to maintain.

JLEONARD,

I have been told that the Westerbink in my sailboat was actually just bought from British Leyland and a rename valve cover was put on it saying Westerbink. Also told to order my parts stright from the UK as they will still be about a tenth of what Westerbink charges. The guy I bought the boat from replaced one injector and it cost him over 300 bucks for it.

What is the application? The 6bt and 4bt are common boat engines. You could also get a 4b down to 80hp at one point. If you keep the displacement the same, gearing and propeller pitch are going to be much more important than hp rating on fuel economy. If you want something under 100hp, go with something smaller and smoother than a 4b. Personally I don't have any experience with the smaller cummins but they do exist.

Depending on the application, don't completely discredit the yanmars, you just have to run different gearing because of rpm difference. Westerbeke diesels are pretty good and the parts for our 4108 are no more epxensive than for any other marine diesel.
