Mass Dampened Drive Line

I have had lots of good suggestions to have a mass dampened drive line installed in my truck to get rid of the rear end noise. Does this mean the noise is NORMAL, but the drive line will keep the noise from being herd in the cab??? Is this fix a cover up????Thanks!!! I want as much info as possible for when I take it to the dealer tomorrow~~

I would also like to hear from anyone else that has the updated driveline installed. I have 3. 73 gears with a little whine on a slight pull at 65 to 70 mph. I have checked the tooth contact pattern when changing fluid and it is textbook perfect on the pull side.



When I was a Ford technician, the two most troublesome gear ratios for a whine noise was the 3. 27 and the 3. 73. All other ratios were quiet as a mouse for the most part. I know for a fact that on some Lincoln Mark VIIIs (3. 27 gears) they came from the factory with a rubber dampened driveshaft. The driveshaft was a tube within a tube with rubber in between them. Maybe if a few more TDR guys chime up we might can find out if it is mostly happening on the 3. 73 ratios or not.

Or better yet, how hard is it to devise a rubber shaft ourselves???? Maybe there is a simple fix that we could do ourselves???

SO has anyone had this part installed? Did it really work??

I noticed on my stock drive line today that there were spot welded balance plates on the ends of the rear drive shaft. Could you have knocked one off or lost one before you got it. Seems a cheesey way to balance.

Does anyone have part numbers for this damped driveline?

When I had ny c42 and 44 recall done several weeks ago, the

very knowledgeable GM of the dealership knew nothing about it.

Is this available for all models and wheelbases? My '03 reg cab

has a slight deceleration whine, which I corrected somewhat by

establishing the proper preload on the pinion bearings. It was

zero. A friend has the typical 65-70 mph whine under load, which

we reduced somewhat by decreasing pinion depth . 002 by sanding the face of the pinion bearing, as the proper AAM shims

are impossible to come by. Both gear sets have perfect contact

patterns. I feel that the damped driveline, if available, may be

the answer. By the way, the 1150 axle is way overbuilt for a

pickup truck, and very easy to work on with a few Miller special

tools.

I took my truck up to have this done and they said BS, that's a bandaid, and they put a new rear axle in my truck. Quiet as can be now.

My dealer(s) say the problem is still normal as can be!!! It howels a bit between 65-70 MPH. . Was thinking of swinging by a regular rear end place. . but don't want to spend the $$$ if I don't have to!
