The Volkswagen Golf intrigued me initially because with a diesel engine getting 38 miles per gallon in the city and 46 mpg on the highway, it offered an annual fuel cost (less than $600) similar to that of a hybrid car.

One problem: You can't purchase or register diesel-powered cars in Massachusetts unless they meet the state's emission standards, and the VW models don't.

Is Mass's emission laws even worse than the big state of Calif. ??? A diesel getting upwards of 45 mpg can't be very dirty.

I can't speak for VW's but I find the quote curious because they have been sold here for years and continue to do so.

I am sure that the new Mercedes diesel is not available here due to smog regulation.

MA uses the CA smog standards which is why the old High Output Cummins were not available here.

Thank Goodness the new 600's are!
