Too much Boost?

I know this is asked a lot on here, but I was wondering how much a NV5600 HD 6 speed as far as fluid holds? Also what size of allen wrench does the fill plug take? Last but least, does the PTO cover have a reusable gasket, or should I just drain it by taking just the bottom bolt out? Thanks

you can also take a 1/2 inch bolt and nut, weld the nut on to the bolt, then place the head of the bolt into the filler plug and take a pair of vise grips and attach them to the nut. poor mans way of not making a trip to sears or local hardware store and saving $20 on a tool only used a couple of times.

I like taking the cover off so that I can clean out all the junk that sits in the bottom and probably wouldn't drain out the bolt hole. I was surprised at the amount of filings and pieces of stuff that were in the transmission on the first oil change. I am using Redline MTL and I am very satisfied with it. I immediately noticed an improvement in shifting. If you do a search here you will find a lot of discussion about oils but it seems that Redline, Amsoil and Royal Purple are the more common choices. Availability is also a consideration.

Thanks! I am looking for an transmission oil for my NV5600 that will smooth out the shifting, yet have supreme viscosity.

1/2" bolt won't work. the head is 3/4" [close to 19mm] if you used a heavy head 3/8" bolt, they have a 11/16" head which is a bit more than 17mm

a standard 10mm bolt has a 17mm head for nuts and bolts

Well I did it last night, I just got a bolt with a 17mm head and two nuts and it was easy. I had ordered Red Line through Summit and also put a bottle of LUCAS transmission additive and it soooo much smoother. I even let my wife try it. She went about 2 miles and I said, okay that's it; my turn. Thanks again for everybody's input.

I know it's too late, now. But, the next time you may want to consider installing one of the trans. filters advertised in Geno's Garage. Someone posted pictures of a filter they replaced (either here or at the DTR) & it was a mess. I was surprised how much "junk" it had trapped.

Also, I was able to buy one of the sockets at Checker's of Autozone & it was pretty cheap. No where near $20. 00. A couple of bucks, maybe.

I recently tested Torco RTF and it helped shift quality immensely.

in the spring, i think i will test some xd-3 0w40 engine lube oil in the nv5600 and see how it feels... worse case, i don't like it and i am out $25cdn for the oil [and i still have 5 qt's of the factory stuff to put in after]. if i like it, it would make oil buying simpler as then i would start running that also in the transfer case [and i already run it in the engine so all 3 would run the same oil]

Engine Oil in Trans & Transfer Case.

Hi Nick,

With all due respect, you may want to investigate that option a bit more.

I've read on the BITOG (bob is the oil guy.com) website, that engine oils are not a good match for many transmissions. I believe it has to do with the additive packages in the different gear oils. They are formulated for each different transmission depending on what the transmission requires to protect things like synchro's, etc. The wrong gear oil will cause excessive wear on things like brass synchro's.

I'm not a very "mechanical guy", like you are but, I do spend too much time reading this stuff. What you mentioned "raised a red flag" & caused me to remember reading about just this thing. I hope you don't mind me suggesting you look into this idea a little further.
