It depends on who does the testing..... There are so many variables that go into how a pump can be tested and there is no set standard to test our pumps. So what one shop may say is 500cc another may call 800cc. The only real constant one has, is to use the same shop and ensure they use the same setup to either increase or decrease pump volume to get what you are looking for.
I have to agree with Jetpilot, every stand is a little different, every shop uses different methods, different fluids to test. And to add to the confusion, every pump is a little different, especially with all the different configurations a p-pump can have, and all the different things you and the shop can do to it.
You guys are doing pump work? I am going to be looking to replace my 175 pump with a 215 and will be wanting to get some work done. Floor it is one of the closests shops for me and have delt with John before.
With the 175 tuned right, would it compare to a 215? I've got all the basic bolt ons in mine and rode in a friends truck with a 215 thats been tuned on a stand, and it was like night and day difference between his and mine. I would be happy if i could get mine to turn a full 4k and get a little more fuel out of mine. I am probably going to attempt to build my own twins so i will need quite a bit more fuel.
There is no doubt that the 215 is the better pump, howevever you can 'make' a 175 run like a 215 you just have to send it to the right shop, not all pump shops are willing to do certain things to a pump, and some are willing to go as far as you like.
As sweet as it would be I dont think i need anything like 800cc's, but i definitely need more than what i have now. Will the 175 turn over 4k rpms? I have a 4k kit in now and it doesnt quite get there.
I would like to be over 600rwhp. I will build a set of twins, so if i can get my pump to spin a pretty large set of twins and make that hp i will be happy. I'm at 468hp now, so i have a pretty good ways to go. Do you guys think my pump worked over would spool a setup like a B-1/HX-60 something around that size? The truck is a 2wd std cab with a manual.
The problem with the 215 pump is the plunger, unlike the older pumps the 215 has a retard notch in the plunger. If you make the rack travel too far the pump begans to retrard and you have to make up for it with timming. The good thing with the 215 pump is the driveshaft better than the pumps that didn't have the retard plungers. Best of both worlds is the old 12mm plungers withput the retard notch and the 215 camshaft. This combination is makes is easy for 800cc and 4500 to 5000 RPM pump. I have seen the 215 pumps with delivery valves ,bigger holders, modified govoner and caliabrated on the stand get 650cc of fuel.
One of the problems with the p-pump (IN MY OPINION) is the cam inside, the lobes on the cam only allow for about 40-45% charge time in the plungers. A ground cam will allow for more charge time meaning more fuel into the chamber) and allowing for more fuel to be delivered. Also there are many other advantages to a ground cam.
