Hello Friends

I am still deciding on what transmission to go with on my 03/04. I am planning to bomb the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER out of it and want to know the limits of the NV4500. Don't plan to tow much past 3k lbs so i think the 6 sp might be too much shifting.

Can the NV4500 handle 5-600 Hp???

Clutch upgrades notwithstanding

Thanks

I too am curious. With over 400 possible from just a box was my choice of the 5-speed for wider ratios a good one?

There are several members that have dynoed over 700hp with that trans and they seem to stay together just fine as long as you dont get stupid with the clutch.

Good to know. How about the input shaft? I've heard stuff.

My 2001 was a 5 speed 4x4 with 385 rwhp and 899. 8 tq, and I ran a 14. 26 at 93 mph with a 1. 96 60'. The transmission felt as good at 73,000 as it did at 10,000, I think it's a solid transmission, but what do I know.

My old 97 was just shy of 600 hp. It was a 5 speed, and I never did anything stupid like chaining two trucks bumper to bumper, or dumping the clutch in 4th gear at 3000 rpms, and the NV4500 lived to be 100K. Third gear took a dirt nap at exactly 100K, and a machinist examined the pieces I could take out of the unit, and told me that there were imperfections in the steel from when it was manufactured that finally showed up after six years. Beyond that, it was the best manual transmission I've ever owned.

thanks for the imput,

Now the decision on whether the s/o is as bombable as the h/o. Considering the improvements made to the h/o i. e cooled pistons etc.

decisions, decisions

thanks

Get the HO 6 speed.

But what do I know. If you want to BOMB, do all you can to be prepared up front. The HO engine and 6 speed are built to stand higher horse power and torque to start with. It gives you a better place to start, instead of being disadvantaged before you start.

My next one will be a HO 6 speed. :D

There is always a good way to test this transmission... ... .

Wait for Greg Boardman to add more power/goodies to his truck and wait to see if he breaks something;)

Go get em Greggy More power to ya Buddy

bombs away... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Get the six speed:D The gap between 3rd and 4th will drive you nuts if you have any load. I have had both and an auto, the six speed is the best IMO.

If you want to go fast and do much "racing" the 5-speed is much easier to speed shift (and then there is 1 gear less to change). Also for those getting serious and concerned about weight, the 5-speed weighs at least 200 lbs less than the 6-speed. If you don't plan on towing the 5-speed isn't a bad choice.

As far as power-making ability, so far it looks like given equal BOMBs, the SO has about a 50hp deficit compared to the HO. Also it has less piston cooling than the new HO, but the same amount of piston cooling as all previous HO 24-valves.

Like many things in life, there are tradeoffs!
