Hi guys,

I wonder what would be the highest recommended rpm with a stock valve train on a ´99 24 valve. are there any experiences with aftermarket valve springs and which ones would you recommend?

I would love to cruise with 3600 and i guess the crank andblock would be strong enough to take that but I dont want the pisotd to kiss the valves.

thanks for any advise. Thomas

These diesels aren't like gassers. The engine will only pull itself so fast. You could park it, lay a brick on the pedal, start it up and walk away. It will run at top speed without harm until it runs out of fuel. Now, with that said, why would you want to cruise at 3600 rpm? That should be somewhere in the range of 170mph in top gear if you have a 3. 54 axle. Your engine will be quite happy running between 1500 to 2000 under full load.

Unless you plan on lightening the crank, changing th ecam, porting the head, and redesigning the intake, and seriously porting the exhaust manifold, you are wasting your time unless you need that RPM to turn some sort of pump, because after 2,600RPM you are only increasing RPM and engine wear while lowering power output.

If you want mroe top speed, it would be cheaper to get a Gear Vendors overdrive unit at $2,500 plus install... .

Even my 24V at 516rwhp and 1022rwtq doesn't need to spin over 2,500RPM to break the tires loose...

I live and the truck is in Germany. with a 3. 54 rear and 305/45/22´s it does 115 mp/h with 3200 rpm. That is not fast for the autobahn and if you basically have the power to give the Porsche Cayennes a hard time.

I have the Gear vendor already which I am going to swap from my old 12 valve to the 24 valve truck. the 12 valve with a 3. 54 as well does 130 mph on GPS with 2800 and the gear vendor. The 24 valve with KSB1B and B2 twins from Mark Kendrik, with a ported, polished and fire ringed head, with a piers cam and piers stupid pumd has the potential to be a lot faster. it is not nice if you have te feeling that it could go a lot faster but doesn´t because of the limited revs.

We prepared an 12 Valve engine which has originally been used in a schoolbus in UK a 160HP with a rotary pump with twins, a 7100 from Bosch and all the goodies to be used in a waterski race boat (www.raffshore.com) and it shows 624 HP on the dyno with 4100 rpm and EGT´s, oil pressure etc. are very healthy.

So please, which set of valve springs should i use to safely turn the engine into the 3800 rpm region??

Thanx for any hint. T. T.

Talk to any of the pulling shops - Adkins Diesel, Scheid Diesel, Haisley Machine, or Enterprise Engine. Any of 'em can set you up with springs to do what you want...

:--) :--) Dang, I have had my truck at 115mph once and scared the crap out of me, I couldnt imagine doing 130 mph even if my truck would do it, thats crazy fast :D :D

Holy Crap!!!!! I gotta move to eroupe!

You guys are crazy! I can do 110- 115, but only for a very short time cause a 4x4 that fast is scary.

deffinately :--) this is for daly driveing/commute? That's judst awsome Oo.

And a big welcome to TDR from the states!

thanks for the wellcome - yess it´s for every day driving and with some suspension and brake work done it´s not bad even in a curvy road at high speeds (as long as it is dry) you should try my 1968 Scout 800 with a 510 HP 406 GM Bowtie motor -that is realy scray but if you see the long faces in the carreras who can´t keep up until approximately 100 or 110 miles even if the try hard, you forget about the adrenaline you´ve wasted in that thing. Btw, I bought it when I was at UCLA in 1988 and finally installed a cage last summer - getting smarter at least...

If I could I would mail a little seqence of a 1/8 mile race last summer where I finished 3rd in diesel class with the 12 valve and first in the V8 class with the scout but i have no clue how it works.

all the best and drive safely

I was excited to know you drove your truck like a race car.

Oo. Oh, now you have an IH Scout. No bowtie fan here, but i cant knock 510HP! I think Id blow my wad if I blew past a Carrera in a lowly lil' IH 4x4.

You should send a story and pics to Harvester Highlights, a publication for IH enthusiest (like TDR for CTD's). There are a few european chapters of the (Inter)National IHC Collectors, dont know whats close to you, TTork.
