I have 2001 with a TST comp box my EGT probe is in the the exhaust manifold itself. I assuming thats what is considered pre turbo what is the max safe EGT'S ? Also what clutch has everyone had good luck with. I do tow and sometimes haul livestock so smooth operation would be nice!
Most of the knowledgeable authorities *I* trust, specify 1300 degrees as the safe redline for EGT pre-turbo - and that there's no problem running up near that reading for GREATLY extended periods - as many commercial/industrial applications do 24/7...
As with other similar issues, keeping the EGT as LOW as possible is always a GOOD thing!
Dunno first hand about yer clutch question - but sure see lotsa fellas going to the South Bend clutches...
As Gary said, 1300 pre-turbo is considered the top safe sustainable EGT. However, many BOMBed rigs out there get pushed considerably higher for short periods. Personally, mine sees near 1700 (10-15 seconds) 4-5 times per week for the past year or so without obvious problems. I will have an opportunity to pull the head and inspect the pistons in October, but at this time it is running as good as always. Here is a link to a poll I did on this topic last year:
With my 4" exhaust and EZ i only go over 1300 for about a second and then it comes right down as the truck downshifts. As everyone else, said, the lower the better. Cruising i dont see higher then 1100.
