safe for the engine

safe for the engine, I would like to know what mph some of you have found is the max speed that you can go without over revving the engine.

The engine will withstand all the rpm you can call for. Cummins calls wide open throttle 'High Idle'. The engine can run indefinitely at this speed. This is for a totaly stock engine.

Kenny: "Well that all depends what size rear you got"

Is that why my wife always drives faster than me? :-laf

what max rpm can the transmission handle?

RPM wise the engine will blow long before your transmission. .

Are you just wondering how long you can flog your truck before it quits or is there a specific purpose to the question? I've run my truck for 17 hours straight with only bathroom breaks pulling a trailer at speeds between 55 and 75. I have run it for 15 hours at 85 all with no concerns. If you want to run your truck flat out at 115mph (roughly) all the time eventually something will happen to either the truck or you.

I know I have a 12 valve and yours is a 24 but for the purpose of this question I don't think it makes a difference

He's asking about the max MPH in DRIVE, not OVERDRIVE. Sounds like he's trying to protect the trans during a long tow??

IIRC, I was able to maintain around 60mph without being over-rev'd during my stint from New Mexico to PA towing my M37 home...

Here is a quickie table I found calculating a stock 265x75r16, 3. 55 rear, and 1:1 ratio. 3rd gear is a 1:1 direct ratio. The table is showing engine RPM and MPH at that RPM.

RPM 3rd Gear
500 13
600 16
700 19
800 21
900 24
1000 27
1100 29
1200 32
1300 34
1400 37
1500 40
1600 42
1700 45
1800 48
1900 50
2000 53
2100 56
2200 58
2300 61
2400 64
2500 66

I was just curious what the suggested safe speed of an 01 dodge ram with stock automatic transmission is with the overdrive off?

Your engine is electronically governed so you could hold your foot to the floor for as long as you like. . . you'll max out at about 3300-3400 RPM. With 3. 54 gears & stock tires you'll just be touching 90mph.

I went 117 MPH going downhill in the rain... . once. That way my personal limit... the tires are not rated for that either.

Before I get flogged, there was not another car in sight and if I had done an end over end roll down the road no one would have been injured other than me and my truck with 300 miles on the odometer.

Just wondering your sig says Cummins Diesel Tech? what kind of work do you do on these engines?

Ashamed

Im ashamed to say that my truck will run about 119 (per GPS) thats with the 275 injectors. It would hit about 116 before, it just gets there quicker now. If I didnt have the lightbar on top, the grille guard, and the hundreds of pounds of crap that I carry in my toolbox & back seat, I figure it would get to the 120 mark easily. Feel free to flog me... Yes, I know better... And I promise I'll never do it again. :-laf

It is not that I want to know how long I can FLOG my engine before it explodes. I work on the Marine series Cummins Diesels for the Navy and we operate those engines around 3800-4000 rpm. The red line on the rpm gauge in the cab of my truck is less than that. Also I want to know so that I don't get close to that level and find out that I the speed I was running at and rpm on the engine was actually bad for both. I have heard a lot of bad rummors about Ddoge transmissions being tempermental. That is the last thing I nee dis to have to rbuild or replace the transmission. Hopefully this helps you al figure out what I nee to know.
