What is the max temp of the pyro both post or pre turbo? I've got a new gauge and I haven't seen my truck yet to check where the probe is and what the max temp is.

Diesel, I have mine pre-turbo. I was under the impression that 1250 was a good cut off point. So once it gets to 1200 I start backing off. Its easy to get there quick pulling my loads and going up the hills. 950 would relate to post turbo placement. This is just my . 02 worth. Mike

Diesel,

Great question. Although it has been hacked out many times before, the max exaust manifold temp is a few hundred (at best) degrees more than the turbine elbow temp. I would like to know why, though. I have heard something to the effect of " the turbo is an air pump and it has a cooling effect" thing, but that doesn't provide the tech info I need. If your exaust temp is, say, 1000 degrees in your manifold then why is it 750 just 18" away in the elbow? If that was the case wouldn't it be cold when it left the pipe? Does THAT much air enter the exaust housing? I was under the impression that it none entered at all, just that the exaust side of the turbo was just that... exaust.

My friends with big rigs say that there is just not that big of a difference to warrant putting the probe in a position that could kill your turbo if the probe breaks. But he doesn't own a Dodge Cummins, just a Kenworth Cummins. The tech is the same, just a bigger turbo and manifold ect... How can this be?

Are there those who have place the probe in both locations and observed differences first hand? Do the temps narrow or widen with long sustained pulls between the two locations?

Yoda, where are you? Send me your wisdom!

The answer is where you seek it.

Go to the main TDR homepage. Under "Product Reviews" there is an article titled "Westach Guage Install" that addresses your questions. The relevant info is on page three but the entire article is worthwhile.
