MAX TOW PACKAGE I still looking a dually, some have the max tow package not going tow a lot but when i do tow 8000-12000 lbs weight plus. My 2002 2500 and trailer weight in 14,900 with no load.

do i go with max tow with 3. 73 or plain 3. 73 gears 4x4. thank andy

If you go for the Max Tow you will be set for the next trailer you buy, it'll be bigger. The package also gives you a funky diff cover, more trans cooling and what ever else. I have the 4:10 Max Tow as I tow heavy. I like the set up.

I believe the Max Tow is only offered with 4. 10's.

With the double OD's of the 68RFE I would get 4. 10's, as it won't effect your empty mileage much, if any, and will greatly improve your towing experience.

Max Tow has a lot of good heavy duty stuff for a small price, it will add value to the truck for future resale

As for me, I am soooo glad to have the 4. 10 gears. My Select Suites weighs 18,500 lbs and I would NOT care to tow it with 3. 73's. I LOVE this truck!! Well, not the unloaded mpg's, but it can't be beat when towing.

JGibert,

now that you have had the truck for a while what kind of MPG towing are you getting?? We just got a 12 with tow max and 4:10's want to know what to expect.

My best mileage towing the 18,500 lb RV is 10. 5. Worst is 8. 5. My normal day mpg is 9 to 9. 5. I am okay with that.
I should add that I normally tow at 60 mph, but this truck rides so smooth and tows so well, that I sometimes find myself creeping up to 65-70 mph. Not often though.

I know you were looking for 3. 73 gears, but I think you'll be glad you got the 4. 10s. With the 68RFE double overdrive transmission, highway RPMs are loafing compared to the old 47RE or 48 RE or either of the 6-speed manuals - 1612 RPM @ 60 MPH versus 2000 RPM @ 60 MPH with my old 2002 3500 with Cummins HO/NV5600/4. 10 axle ratio, and they will make towing a breeze. In effect, the 68RFE gives us that "7th gear" that those of us who had the 4. 10s before the 68RFE always wished we could reach for.

Now that the 4th gen trucks have 4 real doors and plenty of back seat leg room I really don't see why anyone would want a Mega Cab???????

I'd love the Mega Cab for the storage room behind the rear seats. Specially since we haul a Truck Camper I cannot have a truck box in the bed. Never enough space for stuff. But since the Mega Cab cannot be a long bed we did not do it. We do love the Crew Cab and all the bins and storage spaces but could always use more space. Mega Cab would take some traveling bags behind the rear seat. My daughter and our 85# dog take up the back seat space already.
