I just installed the MaxBrake on my 2005 Ram 3500 and can't figure out where to plug into the truck with the white power connector. Called Dutch & Di and he told me it was just left of the steering column up high. I've hunted for as long as my back would hold out and still can't find it. Anyone know if there is a plug in ?

It is near the e-brake clipped to a bracket with another bundle of wires on it. The receptacle is clipped on the e-brake side of the bracket and is just above where the floorboard goes vertical. bg

Thanks for the description. Without your help I would not have found it. I needed a mirror and bright flashlight to see it taped way up behind other wiring. Talk about a stupid place to hide it. I'd like to kick the engineer in the bollocks for costing me an hour of back pain and a lot of bad words to find it.

This site has been invaluable to me for many things. Thanks to all those that are quick to help.

Sorry Brian that I didn't see your post sooner so that Dutch could have called you sooner to explain in more detail where to look. Di

No problem, your description was fine it's just that I could not believe I could not find it so asked others to confirm I was looking in the right place. I could not believe how buried it was and could not see it without a mirror.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but where does a guy go to buy a Maxbrake? My brakesmart is acting up and I have a long trip coming in two months

Contact Dutch and Di in Post#4 above. Thier website is http://www.plugitright.com/ They are MaxBrake dealers.

That being said, PLEASE do decscribe WHAT exactly is going wrong with your BrakeSmart... some of us here, myself included, run one and your's is about the first I have heard of acting up, except for the rare screen pixel dying.

Also, if you DO buy a new MaxBrake, I would be interested in buying your old BrakeSMart to keep around for parts, if you are so inclined to part with it.

first of all, I love my Brakesmart! problem is everytime I hook it up to a two axle trailer it will start showing "short detected" after running for about an hour and than will intermittently fault again at random times. I can reset the fault and it may go 15 minutes or four hours before it will return. I have ran all new wires on the trailer and installed new brakes (complete backing plates). the only way I can think of testing the unit is to install a new unit and see if it is the trailer or not. I have two one axel trailers that never fault and two two axel trailers that both fault. I am open to any ideas or suggestions at this point.
on another note, I went to the Plugitright web sight and it stated that they are no longer distributers for Maxbrake?

Are any of the trailers tilt bed? If so you may be losing ground at the break over point. I have two tilt trailers and I had to run ground from tongue to the frame on both. bg

NOT sure why your BrakeSmart is going in to an error mode, but simply judging from the fact that it does so with 2 specific trailers, and NOT with 2 others, then I would have to venture that it IS the trailer wiring, not the Brakesmart, despite your efforts at rewiring the trailer.

I DO like BGSmiths idea of running a separate ground wire for those trailers that are exhibiting the problem, whether or not they are tilt trailers. ALSO, if for some reason you used ScothLoks connectors on the trailer wiring, I would go back and use solder and marine shrink tube on the connections. I owuld do all of that before buying another controller.

On the subject of PlugItRigjht no longer being a MaxBrake distributor, it look like that JUIST happened 3 days ago... they DID leave a direct contact phone number for MaxBarke on the same webpage... .

Thanks for the reply's, the trailers are not tilt beds, just travel trailers. I can try the ground wire idea, can't hurt. One trailer is a fifth wheel and the other is a bumper tow. it never faults when I apply the brakes, always when just cruising along. lights on or off makes no difference. What exactly sets the fault? I know that the Brakesmart sends out a signal every so often to test the circuit. The fault is "short detected" meaning something has gone to ground. only thing in the circuit is the brakes (New) or a ground wire. I have even replaced the wires going thru the axle tubes! Connections are with wire nuts for now until I find the problem then I will solder and shrink tube everything.

Only difference I can come up with is the difference in the resistance for the single axle vs the tandems. Do you have to reset the braking effect between the singles and tandem? Of course there is a difference in the resistance between the two and maybe the controller is seeing that? bg

now your starting to see my dilemma, all I do is hit the manual brake button until it says calibration done. That is all the instructions say to do, gain set at 40. I towed the trailer for 4 year before the problem started and it seems to get worse every year that's why it seems to be the controller. I just can't prove it

Just a clarification on Plug It Right. I put a notice on our website both on our store front and on the Max Brake page about 6 weeks ago. I was trying to give my customers some advanced notice that when stock was gone I was going to have to give up being the online retailer. It had just grown too big for me. Several days ago, I amended the notice that the time had come. I did & do want my customers to know that I will always be available to them for questions & tech support. I will refer warranty/repair inquires directly back to Max Brake or you can contact them directly at the info provided by Seafish. Diana
