2001 May Madness
by Joe Donnelly
Good news! There will be a May Madness in 2001, Wednesday through Saturday, May 16-19.
Perhaps you read John Holmes' concerns about the future of May Madness in Issue 29, p. 94. John and I have come to an interim "solution" to the funding and location issues. For 2001, May Madness will be held in Las Vegas. The format will be somewhat "modular" like a buffet at a Las Vegas casino! Hopefully this change will make planning the event less labor intensive, while keeping most of the popular events. Not all of these events have been developed by press time for this issue. We are not sure of the kinds of support Dodge will provide us, if any. Therefore we are proceeding with the assumption of no support. If we receive support, we will add modular events or increase the scope of events already planned.
A local dealership, Desert Dodge, has enthusiastically agreed to help with registration, display trucks, etc. The dealership has limited physical space, so we plan to hold most events at the host hotel/RV park and at the Las Vegas Speedway area.
Silver State Motorsports is located at the Speedway (its own exit from I-15 just north of Las Vegas) and will be the site of the Dyno Days. Their Dynojet 248C can handle "only"1200 horsepower, so one Ram at a time, please! We have set up possible dyno days on the 16th 17th, and 18th, depending on the level of interest each day. The shop has about 12 bays with three lifts. Vendors are invited to attend the Dyno Days. Here is your chance to test that new [censored] and see just how much horsepower it really gives your Ram at the wheels! Maybe some enterprising vendors will have demonstration units of their [censored] boxes or other goodies. The dragstrip at the Speedway holds a "Test-n-Tune" event of drag racing time trials on Friday evenings. May 18 is not expected to be crowded with "gas pigs" so we can look forward to lots of time for diesel clatter.
Cummins Intermountain has graciously offered to host a Thursday afternoon open house at their facility (2750 Losee Rd, North Las Vegas). Their facility is not far from the Speedway, just one block south of the I-15 Cheyenne exit. They plan to have technical seminars with guest speakers from Cummins, and perhaps even free food!
Lake Mead Cruises will give us a group rate of $32 for their two hour (6:30 to 8:30 PM) dinner cruise on Lake Mead, Thursday, May 17. We need a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 75 participants for this event (75 reserves the entire boat), and relatively soon so we don't get bumped by any other groups. To get this rate, you have to send the funds with your registration. They won't accept individual payments at the group rate. We will have to pay them with one check (it will be issued from Desert Dodge since you are making your individual checks out to Desert Dodge).
We will hold a Best Dressed Truck contest, have vendors in a Hall-of-the-Gottahavits, and hold technical seminars on popular issues such as power, maintenance, drivetrain upgrades, etc. The local Bosch shop, J&S Diesel, has offered to participate. Several vendors have also volunteered for these 20-minute seminars. The seminars will be technical, not merely sales pitches. Significant product features and advances will be presented, in a positive light.
We plan to hold "tours" in caravan fashion. They will be led by volunteers. Each tour might include one or more local attractions such as Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Mount Charleston, Caesar's or Fashion Show shopping mall, Southern Nevada historical museum, Liberace museum, Ethel M candy factory, Hoover Dam, Pahrump winery, etc. Choices depend on participant and volunteer preferences, and on available time. Some of these tours will require admission fees, to be paid by the participants. Each participant will pay for individual dyno runs, boat cruise/dinner, entrance fee at the dragstrip, fees for museums, etc. That way you pay for what you want to attend, not for what you don't want.
The host hotel and RV park has about 300 rooms and 200 RV spaces. First come, first served. Register with them early. Not only may other "turboheads" beat you to the rooms/spaces, but others may make reservations, unrelated to May Madness. Just as for the river cruise, we don't have unlimited credit to guarantee reservations for blocks of rooms and spaces. We will "create" blocks by reserving early on an individual basis. Other hotels and RV parks are close by, on Boulder Highway, if you register late, but you can expect to be somewhat inconvenienced, and may have to pay more. If you identify the TDR group when you make your reservation, your RV space will be grouped with the rest of us, not scattered somewhere else in the park. Our official hotel will be Arizona Charlie's-East, 4575 S. Boulder Hwy. , Las Vegas, NV. 702-951-9000.
Our contact person at Arizona Charlie's-East for HOTEL ROOMS is Janet Smith (702-951-5900; 800-362-4040). The TDR group rate is lower than other discounted rates at $53. 41 including tax per night.
Our contact person at Arizona Charlie's-East for RV SPACES is Justine Thomas (702-951-5911; 800-970-7280). The TDR group rate is lower than other discounted rates at $16. 35 including tax per night.
Make your hotel/RV reservations early. Their garage is huge! It has four stories and it wasn't anywhere near full, even on a Friday night with lots of people in the casino. The garage is clean, bright and airy. Like all garages, it has a low ceiling but will take a Ram easily, unless it has a tall CB antenna! With the Las Vegas sunshine expected in May, the shade may be welcome for events such as a show-n-shine and Best Dressed Truck contest.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to register for May Madness 2001 early as well. We need to have an idea of how many will participate, so we can take care of deposits and reservations of equipment, time and space for activities. This is the first time for holding this event in Las Vegas, and the volunteers of the local chapter ("Desert Rattlers") will be very busy! John Holmes has offered to help, and perhaps we can "enlist" other past volunteers so this meet will uphold the high standards that John has set with the six prior May Madness events. Let's make the one in Las Vegas the LUCKY seventh one!
