Mbrp Drone..........

I installed a MBRP 409ss system yesterday on my LWB QC & found out I only thought I had a droning problem with my stockexhaust/walker muffler setup. This thing is the real deal, ear wax removal starts about 1800 & tapers off about 2200 rpm. Unfortunately I have 4. 10 gears & 33" tall tires so this is were It runs ,most of the time MBRP graciously gave me a discount to buy thier resonator so I can install it to fix the problem with thier exhaust

I picked the MBRP because I had not seen too many others with problems, but now I find I am not alone. The system looks nice, beautiful bends etc, but the drone is too bad to live with. The exhaust note is fine, it's just the drone that's the problem.

Get a Dynomax race muffler from summit or jegs. they are 4" in and out straight through. outside dia is about 6" you can get different lengthes. I used about a 16"

The MBRP resonator helped, but did not completely eliminate the drone.

It's tolerable now & almost too quiet outside.

I tried running a Dynomax 5" in and out race muffler along with a Jannety (Walker?)muffler and then the 4" glass pack that came with my system. Thats 3 mufflers total form the trans crossmember back to the axle. I had a bad drone. I just went to running a Banks stainless muffler with the same 4" glass pack and the drone is actualy better. Not gone but it seems better than before.

It's a very stragne thing when this happens. We sell over 100 24 valve systems a month and every now and then we get one that has a drone, I have seen it happen on any brand exhaust you want to name as well. No one can figure out exactly why it happens on an occassional truck and or how to stop it. The other 99. 9% never have a problem and just rave about the sound when cruising and when floored too!



I know this doesn't help you, but I REALLY want to know why it happens on such a small population of the trucks.

Thanks Mark. It's a 12V & I will eventually know how to correct it.

I posted earlier that it was tolerable, but it's not, it was enough better I was somewhat relieved. At MBRP's suggestion, I wrapped the intermediate pipe & about half of the muffler with 50' of header wrap, minor change, I reversed the muffler (temp hanger) & that shifted the RPM range down about 70rpm, so 65mph is not as bad as it was. Martin (MBRP) is working with me. Before I started all of this I had the stock system with the lil walker muffler & had put 3 layers of b-quiet extreme on the back of the cab. The truck is quieter outside now, but louder inside from 1850-2100RPM. Most of the noise is coming from the back of the cab but you can feel it sitting in the truck if you rev it with the truck at rest. When my wife is in a good mood (I'll be under a running truck I want to get her to run it in & out of resonance & try to find what is getting excited.



I forgot to mention, I also tried a 15" tailpipe extension a (It was dark outside & that shifted the affected RPM down about 50rpm, that made me wonder about a 5" tip???

Just FYI, I'm very pleased with the customer service & the fit & finish of the system. My truck just happens to be one of the few that is having trouble muffling all that torque... .....

You're not alone in this. I've had my MBRP 409 system for about 4 weeks now and the drone drives me crazy. It starts about 65mph and then gets really bad at 70 and above. I'm getting used to driving about 60mph everywhere I go because of it.



The exhaust is already too quiet for me outside the truck so the resonator is out of the question, not to mention the outrageous price they want for one. I hadn't posted anything about this system yet but since others are having the same problems, I thought I would chime in.



I'm also really disappointed in the fact that the system is collecting rust spots. I called Mark, at DPP who was very helpful, and informed me that the 409 systems will do this because they are a "magnetic" metal. I wish I had known that upfront. MBRP should require their distributors to post this information. Had I known this, I might have gone with the 304 system. I had never heard of stainless steel rusting before.



I don't think that this drone "mysteriously" shows up in only a few trucks. That doesn't really make sense to me. I think that it's just not talked about like it should be. I rode in another truck with the same system a few weeks ago and it also had the drone in the cab. I would be willing to be that all the systems have a drone but some people just don't mind it.



The only thing I was happy with was the peformance aspect of the system. I could tell that it opened things up but other than that, I'm not very pleased. Had I not demolished my stock system while taking it off, I would have attempted to send the MBRP system back and try something else. It's not the product that I expected it to be.

You really should call MBRP & let them know about it so at least they know there is at least one more customer that is not pleased with the product. The guy I've been talking to does seem to want to solve the problem & is working on something for me. I will let you know what I wind up with. One of the things I want to try is the resonator with no muff. To be fair, there are many post with MBRP users that love em & have no issues. There are also many post about other exhaust systems including the most expensive one's with the same drone at mostly the same RPM range 1800-2200.

Try the aeroturbine resonator it will eliminate Drone and give a nice turbine sound at the tailpipe. I mate them up with my Diamond eye exhaust systems real sweet tone

I had a hanger break/crack on my T409 mbrp system, and now it's making a humming/vibration at idle that I can't figure out. Between 2000-2200rpm if you are on the accelerator, it will hurt your ears it's so loud. I appreciate lower EGT's, but if I hadn't hacked my stock exhaust, I would have put it back on a long time ago. Sorry to say this is one of the mods I wish I hadn't done.

this is going to sound odd, but have you guys tried running without a muffler? with my stacks, I tried three different mufflers, and EACH ONE caused MORE interior resonance than running straight pipe.

Had I known this, I might have gone with the 304 system. I had never heard of stainless steel rusting before.

Look at the tailpipe of any new Ford Ranger or Explorer sometime. They're stainless from the factory, low grade like what you bought. Of course it rusts.



Any ferrous metal will rust eventually. Your exhaust system will look just like mild steel eventually, it will just take longer than with alumnized or just straight steel.

Also, I am EXTREMELY TICKED about the fact that MBRP has lowered their price on the 409 system by about 10% but the price of the muffler delete pipe has increased by a few dollars. Makes no sense at all. I bought my system only about 4 weeks ago and now their selling them for that much less. I can say that I won't be doing business with them again.

welcome all you MBRP owners to the drone club. i paid 995. 00 plus tax from PIERS for mine. it has always had the dreded drone at 65 to 70 mph. certainly is anoying. dont know what to do about it. dont have time to frig with it either. you live and learn about buying things, they are not always as advertized.

I installed the 409 cool duals two weeks ago and have no noticeable drone. The sound is awesome, and all I can say is what a difference in spool up. Truck is going to MASS DIESEL in a couple weeks to have DTT upgrades. Then I can start adding fueling enhancements. I can't wait Oo. .

I drove a '96 Dodge 1500 with true duals (straight from the header with no crossover, no cat, no muff) for 3 years before I got my diesel. As you might have guessed by now, I'm not at all interested in having another "obnoxious" sounding truck even if it is a diesel.



And I'm sure I don't have to go into the fact that the exhaust sound out of the tailpipe also contributes to the sound INSIDE the cab.

like I said, with my stacks, the interior resonance was WORSE with the three different mufflers I tried than it was with straight pipe...



with my 5" straight pipe, the resonance is no different inside than with two different styles of resonators...
