Thought I'd share my first hand experience with today's installation of an 04. 5 elbow & downpipe, middle pipe (cat delete section if it was an 600 CTD), and the MBRP muffler/offset - all 4" - and connected to my original 4" tailpipe. Tomeygun supplied the "kit" and at his recommendation, I opted for the stainless steel band clamps - an option that I highly recommend. The end result is a super clean installation, strong, and can be disassembled for the next mod - which surely there will be other mods (i. e. , new turbo and downpipe). Tom certainly has hands-on experience with the 305/555 configuration and is an easy person to talk to.

Everything fits nicely, a sign of good engineering. The MBRP must weight 25 pounds less than the huge stock muffler. You can not appreciate the difference in size 4" makes over 3. 5" until you put the 04. 5 ebow next to the stock one, or the 04. 5 downpipe next to the seemingly tiny 3. 5" original one. No daylight show through the monster stock muffler but you can drop a softball straight through the MBRP. The MBRP muffler/offset pipe uses the stock hangers/rubber mounts and fits up nicely to the 4" original tailpipe. I cut the stock tailpipe right where it expands to 4" from the outlet of the stock muffler. I also cut off the original 3. 5" pipe going into the stock muffler just before the slip joint, saving the muffler from any damage.

OK, OK, everyone wants to know how it sounds... I was a little concerned that I would create a monster and have a LOUD truck. Not true. When I first started it up there was little change at idle. Blip the throttle and I noticed a little more "bite" to the exhaust. It was a bit crisper and very responsive. Driving it off like my grandmother, I was relieved that the noise level seemed unchanged, at least so close to stock that any difference was minimal. Once up to temperature I began to play a little and found a very civilized sound until I got serious, then a healty, muscular sound was revealed - but not obnoxious.

I took it on the Interstate and under light throttle I could not tell any difference again. Getting on it pretty good brought on the nice sound again. I did not experience any drone, but that test will be later when I hook up and pull the trailer. From what I can tell right now, I'm not really expecting a problem.

Also my EGT dropped 600°F, my ETs by 3 full seconds, and the paint is much more shiny! ;) No, I really don't expect too much performance wise, but the efficiency of the new system can not help but be improved. Visualy, the comparison of components is obvious to any engineer. If I get a 100°F drop in EGTs while pulling 15,000 pounds up a long hill, then it will be justifiable.

Actually, I can justify the expense on enjoying the sound alone...

Les,

Many thanks for the detailed report. Sounds like the MBRP might be the way to go. The info I need to make my decision, you talked about, in that I'm going to wait until you tow your trailer and see if there is/isn't any loudness and drone under load. I won't buy it, or any other exhaust, if that's the case. Please let us know how it does just as soon as you can.

Thanks!

Steve

Thanks for the nice info Les. I am in the process of doing the same thing. I just got a Pac brake PXRB for a 04. 5 with the 4" outlet, and a 04. 5 downpipe. My MBRP 600 muffler kit should be here tomorrow, then all i will need is a stick of 4" and some band clamps. Cant wait to get it all together. Also have a stainless tip coming from Genos. I will have to wait for spring to see how it works towing the 5er, its put up for the winter :{

Hey Les, I have the MBRP duals system on my '03 305/555 and I too pull a heavy trailer, and it sounds awesome :-laf . There is no drone at all, and I have received a lot of compliments on how it sounds and how cool the duals are. I had a power joke owner ask me if his would sound as nice, and I just laughed. Poor soul, wants to be a cummins owner deep at heart. Anyway, don't worry about the drone issue while pulling, because there is none. Have fun with it, and throw some smoke :D :D .

For the MBRP T-409 turboback single... I was quoted $429. 00 shipped from someplace different for my 2004 2500 QC 4x4. Dunt know how much more they could beat that by.

I know that is its an advertised price that they will match or beat. Unadvertised is an all together different animal... ... . :-laf

I have the MBRP system as well. Very nice and easy to install. Awesome sound as mentioned above.

Not to hijack a thread but I know of a good guy to deal with too.

www.dieselperformanceparts.com

They guarantee lowest price. Check them out!

DPP is 17 miles from my house... a very dangerous location - too close!!

Their facility is top notch with plenty of stock. I like it that all the guys there are diesel truck guys and really know thier stuff. You don't get some air-head on the phone that just knows how to plug in the catalog number and your credit card. Mark is a low key contributor to this forum and simply lets us know when he has something that we may be interested in.

Be sure to ask for the TDR discount. I saved a few bucks there today, in fact. Or was it that I spent some bucks there today... whatever!

Not bad, Sounds about right..... Heck DPP is where I buy all my stuff

Good retailer, Even better wholeseller - Thumbs up to DPP

DPP is great to deal with, got my MBRP from them.

Got the Pac brake from Pacific brake & clutch, free shipping for TDR members! :)

Mark,

Your guys must have told you I was checking out the dual gauge steering column mount, boost and fuel pressure Phantoms... .

Christmas is coming and I usually buy myself the BEST presents!

My delima is do I install a fuel pressure gauge now and find out that I need a FASS system, and then have to relocate the fuel pressure sensor; or do I buy the FASS system and then install the fuel pressure sensor on it.

I know, I know!! Buy them both and install the sensor once. I'll have to be a very, very good boy for Santa to spring for that kind of a purchase!!

Hi

Do you have part numbers for your change over kit with the stock tail pipe used. Part numbers for the Dodge factory 600 parts that you replaced. Thanks, Jim

Jim, I got everything from Tomeygun. He included the 600 cast elbow and lower clamp (the outlet of the turbo is 4" so you can use your original turbo/elbow clamp), 04. 5 downpipe, a section of 4" for the "middle" pipe (or you can use the cat delete test pipe from DPP), and the MBRP muffler/offset pipe kit. Go for the band clamps as they are light years ahead of the standard u-clamps.

I'm sure Tom or others can give you the Dodge part numbers. You may be able to find someone that installs an exhaust brake and no longer needs their 04. 5-05 cast elbow. With that, you would need to order an elbow/downpipe clamp, downpipe, DPP cat delete, and MBRP kit.

What I liked best about the installation was how everything used the stock exhaust hangers and nothing had to be welded or fabricated.

Here are the PN's: cast elbow: 5161570AA

downpipe: 52121600AA

clamp: 52121285AA

Then you just need a MBRP "600" muffler kit and a stick of 4" tubing. Viola... full 4" system.
