My Sister-in-law has a question and is in Texas and I am in Oregon so here is here question.

at the lower right of my screen(task bar) where it shows the time, there is a mcafee virus shield sign icon where i can click on and it brings up the screens about the mcafee virus. it shows it as 'disabled'. when i click to turn it to 'enabled', and end, then on the task bar, over the icon it shows a round circle with a bar in it and the circle is in red. do you know what the red circle means? thanks

Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who responds.

Here's a maybe??

My computer is a Dell. When I purchased it,it had Mcaffee installed.

I got use it for one year, then I had to pay to keep it going.

I don't remember if it had that symbol you described or not.

I use Norton now.

Maybe your Sis's free time is up,like mine was.

Fuzz,

Thanks, I suspect that is the correct answer as to why the circle turns red altho if I was doing it I would alson notify the freebe was now defunct. I use the free AVG but do not know how it stacks up agains others.

The place in the start bar with the clock and other icons is called the system tray. It generally dislays the "system" items that are activated at windows startup.

For the McAfee, something is preventing it from running when windows is started. You should try the setting first and see if that helps.

I started with the McAfee ViruScan that came with my Dell, got a free upgrade, and was very happy with it for almost 4 years.

Well, they no longer support older versions. I purchased the new version and have NEVER had as much trouble with S/W. I finally removed it completely or at least most of it. Not sure if I want to try loading it again. I need to go back to the McAfee website and get tech support.

On-line tech support is the same place your sister should try. It may help.

In my current dilemna, ANYTHING is better than McAfee

Virus Protection

I had trouble with McAfee too, always had problems updating it and it was always trying to sell me an upgrade package. I uninstalled it and went to Norton, have been updating it on a regular basis now for over a year for free. I think there is a nominal anual fee for this but it is far less costly than McAfee.

mcafee

sorry to hear you guys/gals have had problems with mcafee. I really like it. seamless updates and all. I rum Windows Me and version 5. 21. 1 virus scan. What systems are these problems occuring on?? Maybe I can help?

I'm runing Win 95 OSR2 (95b) and loaded then unloaded VirusScan 6. 0 The basic load was OK... The problems really erupted when I did the online update.

Glad I unloaded the S/W. A buddy of mine got infected with the goner virus and ending up spamming it to me. I didn't catch it. It appears to use anti-virus S/W as a launching pad to load itself. No Av S/W so no virus.
