The civil engineering world is fairly universal in its use of 'rise over run' to define slopes, looking at the vertical and horizontal components of a slope. Take a look at how roof pitches, drain slopes, and the like are expressed—all use 'rise over run'.

Sure I see the geometry now. Right angle triangle with 1 mile base and vertical component would have a longer diagonal component. But I'm measuring the diagonal vs. the vertical, so it may be off, but it's close enough for a non-engineer.
