Don't know so I'm asking.

Are there any websites comparable to Rockauto, 1AAuto, Carparts.com, PartsGeek, etc. for Medium and HD trucks/equipment?

For whatever reason I found my self looking at a 70's C70 roll back with a 6V53 and got to wondering how feasible sourcing parts would be for medium and HD trucks of this vintage or "modern" for that matter.

Medium and heavy duty engines and running gear are mostly universal to any truck with that particular item and you can go to any truck dealer for parts. Cab, frame and some suspension will be unique to the make and model. The issue might be the age of the vehicle, such as a 6v53, it is old. However, Detroit sold jillions of them so parts may still be easy to find. Love them old Detroit's, no matter the size, or cylinder count, they all sound the same:D

Am I right in understanding that its better to look at the power and drive train than get hung up on the mfg. Cab and chassis excluded for specific application parts?

In a way, yes. Unless you are partial to a certain make and model. I would not go so old, 70's is older than you:)

What class truck, CDL? I would stay away from Cat 3116, 3126 and C7 and Ford 6.6 or 7.8. Cummins or IH is good, DT466-DT570 IH or 6.7, 8.9, 9L, L10 or M11 Cummins. The 5.9 is too small for that size truck.

Manual transmission or auto. If auto, go at least a 5spd. Manual 5+2 is good as is a 9 or10spd. Even a 6 or 7 spd.

Like Mike said, air brakes is also good. Exhaust or Jake brake. A roll back needs to be at least 21', 19' is too short for the full size 4 door trucks.

The C70 if it is what I think it is, used a modified square body cab…so cab parts for the most part might be sourced from LMC Truck
The rights to those models as far as specific items such as motor mounts might have gone to Volvo when the dust died down. I would call and find out.

6V53….the two stroke Detroits were bought out by MTU. The demand has diminished but if you scrounge the parts are out there.
A 6V53 is the noisiest two stroke I ever lost some hearing to. Be aware..

Also it will mark its turf just like a Harley. They leak oil, get over it….not a big deal
Also need straight weight motor oil, preferably 40 weight rated for a two stroke. Still available..

Number 1 thing!! Make sure the Emergency Shutdown works. That’s your first line of defense if it decides to run away. Should be a red handle in the cab marked “Emergency” or something similar. That trips a flapper just above the blower to kill combustion air. Has to be manually reset once tripped.

I wasn't considering buying this c70 just using it as an example since it popped up in my marketplace feed (even though its all the way in OH). Good information though thank you.

I did want to start getting acquainted with parts sourcing incase anything near me worth while comes up for a decent price. I'd like to branch out in my MM work and potentially flip some trucks back onto the road if the bones are good enough.

For what its worth this was a 10 speed live tandem 70s c70 with a 20' bed and hydraulic winch, according to the add. They're asking 5K, running and driving with one hydraulic cylinder confirmed leaking with other misc. items needing to be taken care of to be road ready. Granted the camera man will tell you what he wants to but the cab looked pretty decent from the pictures for an OH truck I see a line of rust on the lower portion of the grille.

Air brakes??

I'm not nearly as versed in these trucks but from the picture; I think the arrow I drew might be a tank.

That is the bigger style, same cab as the Brigadier and Bruin. Those will be scarce.
Tube tires instead of tubeless, that means they are three piece “Man Killer” rims.

Those hubs, both front and rear are no longer available…

Probably has an Eaton Fuller RT or RTO 910 10 speed. Looks like 34,000 lb drives, probably Meritor.

Can’t see the suspension, but probably Hendrickson Walking Beam.

Air brakes for sure..

Butterfly hood instead of Fiberglass Tilt. Not fun to work on…

Let me interpret that for you, "I think I'd pass."

Look for something newer with common components.

How new? I say this with a grain of salt now, but I don't mind the older vehicles and engines(given parts availability) but I'd like to stay away from v8 Diesels.

Just another one I saw in passing. A 97' International 4700 with a 16' dump bed, CLD needed. Seller doesn't have a lot of details on it since he's trying to trade if for a 7.3 or 6.7 F350/450. It is manual.

Are older Volvo cab overs hard to come by? Saw one with just a chassis and frame all complete.

Also this 78' International 1824 with a Gas 345, 5 speed with two speed rear. All working and running except the swing gear box.

So you are not necessarily looking for a roll back truck, just any medium duty that you could put to work doing whatever? Yes, I would stay away from the v/8 diesels. IH used a lot of the power stroke type. I would also stay away from gassers. The crane truck above has 4x4. I like that style IH, S series I think.

Ford made some good trucks in that era. I don't like cabover but I do like the Ford.

Correct, almost any medium duty that doesn't need a CDL to operate and not a one off job specific application is on the table.

What's your reasoning behind staying away from gassers? Aside from the drinking problem and them not being as application desirable as Diesel engines I can't think of much else.

That's a really pretty Ford though.

Gassers, especially older ones are problematic and at elevation are underpowered. Carb, points, timing, plugs, wires, exhaust and poor gas. Electronic ignition and fuel injection will help some. Back in the day, my gasser trucks always had the hood open. When I went to diesel they stay shut and all have exhaust brakes.

You might consider a dump truck or dump trailer. Around here they are thick. Rolloffs are very popular.
