I'll keep my 3500 QC till the new Ford comes out or a new Chevy. I won't buy a truck made in Mexico, they are not filling the bill for a real crew cab, and with the problems I have had with this Dodge others can't be much worse. I bought it for the Cummins and think it will be gone soon as Mercedes pushes them out. To bad Dodge.

And one more thing that I got to say. What is SO MAGIC about an 8' box that all these people claim it's not a real truck without it? Are you ALL carpenters hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood all week?

I mean give me a break, I can put the stupid tailgate down once in a while when I haul lumber or a quad, big deal. Why aren't you complaining about the lack of a 10' box??

I understand there is certainly a market for both, but I would never say to anyone it isn't a truck if it doesn't have the bed length I prefer. Get a grip people.

I bet 90% of the loads most of us put in the back 90% of the time fit just fine in a short bed, so what is wrong with that?

Most work trucks need a bigger bed than 8 feet. Eight feet is the norm before it gets to big to park any where and use as a dual purpose vehicle. I don't need to leave the tailgate down and worry if something will fly out and injure someone. Most things are packed 8' long or 4x4 skids. It makes it handy. If your just picking up flowers and small packages it great to have a shorter bed it's easier to park. Plus the payload stinks as it stands now. Nothing to fret as the other option are open.

If I want to struggle trying to load things in the back of my truck, I'll put it in my Suburban. Funny thing is, my Suburban w/the seats down will hold more cargo than this Mega cab truck. Something is wrong with that. Yes, I have a construction background, there is something magical in being able to load 8' 2x4s and 8' lengths of plywood and sheetrook and put the tail gate up. Its nice not to have to tie off a load. Anyone who has ever worked out of their truck knows what I am talking about. I will not have it any other way. Even picking up hay, I'd have to make 2 trips, instead of one. It's just plain less capacity. When you start reducing the hauling capacity on a HD truck, it is counter intutive and a damn near a sin. When I pull my GN horse trailer, I like the added room in the back for my cross box tool box, hay and extra doo dads while being hooked up. A 6' bed doesn't cut it for me.

The reason no one complains about a 10' bed is because an 8' bed is the standard.

OH! The horror! The box will be a foot shorter once the stack piping in in it! Oo. Oh the horror! :D :p :D

I agree though. Mabee people who live in urban areas don't really need a big box, but those of us that tow haul, or live in places like Texas, the Dakotas, Montana, and places where there is place for farming and rural homes, you just need a big box. For me, I will never buy a truck with a short box. Just not a option. I use the extra length on a weekly basis.

Megasaurus!!!!

Just like "no replacement for displacement" "bigger is better" :D :--) Oo.

10 foot box! Now that sounds exciting!!! The Mega Cab is the way to go!! What a way to go on a Hunting trip!!

Personally, *I* can't understand what's so hard for some to accept as to the needs of others for a full 8 foot bed - if we DIDN'T really need it, it wouldn't BE an issue, now would it! :p

Take my current truck with it's 8 foot bed:

IF I lose 2 feet off that bed, something HAS to go - and as it is, I already lose nearly 2 feet with my fuel/tool tank, so with a *6* foot bed and that tank, I only have *4* feet of bed space left!

Believe it or not, some of us DO need an 8 foot bed, HONEST! ;) :D

These things have the hyrdo-formed frames so it makes sense initially to build it on the long bed/QC chassis so they can get this to market. Give them a year or so and I would think a long bed/dually will follow. At least they got it to market and it wouldn't be too crazy to extend the frame and install a long bed if someone really needed it.

The semi shops do this all the time changing the length of semi frames for different apps. Now to chop your new $40K+ rig in half and weld some more length. :--) It really wouldn't be to terribly expensive... as long as you could sell your short box and roll it into a long box.

Let's just wait and see what happens... the logistics of getting this thing produced are crazy. Is there a limit to how long a rig can be from the factory... how long is a 4-door Ford longbox... and how much longer would a MC/LB be vs. Ford?

They might have to deal with a different way of hauling numerous rigs that are exceptionally long. You could only fit so many on current car haulers and trains and the dealerships would be hurting for parking spaces as a long box version would take up so much room.

Someone will extend the frame within 6 months of purchase and we'll see it here first... I'm sure of this. :D

MEGA CAB SHORT BED? Whats up with that?

To all the short bed owners out there I say if it works for you GREAT! I have to agree with the others however. I know I use mine regularly too & a 6' bed just ain't gonna cut it. There certainly are advantages to the short bed though..... You can park your truck inside your standard garage, much easier to park, ah... ah... . ah... .

I guess with that I'll shut up now & say to each his own. I think the MEGA CAB is pretty cool & definately gonna be a competitor of the F350 CrewCab. I can just hope that it sells well enough for Dodge to continue building it & that the demand for a 8' bed pushes Dodge into building one.

Clay ;)

Didn't Chevy make a 10' bed in the 70's? Of course, it wasn't a crew cab. Maybe we could find one of those beds and stick it on the Mega!:D I saw a casino limo today... it was a REALLY stretched Excursion. It literally took both parking spaces. Please, Dodge, even if there won't be a long bed right away, let us know if there will be one in a year or so. That way, I won't make a purchase I might regret...

With that big cab, the thing may end up too long for an 8' bed. DC is going after the soccer dad market. :{ :-laf :)

No need to buy a new Dodge crew cab. My gripe is the lack of a F-450 type in a Dodge. A truck rated to pull a 17K trailer would get me to the Ram dealer. The QC is still my favorite, I don't have a need for a full size back seat. Rather have the tighter turning.

Dodge needs a 4500 QC long bed 5 speed auto with 26K GCWR and at least 13,100 in GVWR that looks better than the Chevy 4500/5500 and holds up 430% better than the Ford Super Duty. Please..... :D

M cab

On my earlier post I mentioned not needing an 8' bed being out of the drywall trade. In my case the room I needed was for 12' board, not 8'. Tailgate had to be down anyway. Our grid and metal track and studs were all at least 10'. I know where the guys are coming from when they say the shorty won't cut it. Gonna need to wait on the Civic driving beancounters at DC to realize their homes don't just "happen". A lot of times our trucks got us enough stuff on the job to get started till the rest was delivered, I miss those days. That was back when my "dreams were wet and my farts were dry" now ... . well never mind..... Mike

Utility Trailers = longer beds

Each of us has different needs and after owning both long and shortbed trucks at the same time, have settled on shortbeds if it's a fourwheel drive. The bed on a 4x4 is so tall that I don't find it useful to haul major work stuff. Small utility trailers fill the bill for me with lengths ranging from 10' to 20'. My favorite trailers are light enough to move by hand, lift up and set the hitch on the ball and go, like a 7' x 10' with side rails and a 3500lb axle. It's low -easy to load/unload, tie to, no scratch/dent worry and it will out haul any longbed. I replaced my camping fifth wheel with a travel trailer and Hensley Hitch and couldn't be happier-- no longer have to fight getting the fifth wheel hitch in and out of the bed to have room to haul the light stuff and small stuff, no more holes or rails to deal with.

I like the MegaCab but not sure that I need the extra rear seat space anyway. I do prefer the shorter overall length of a short bed or standard cab longbed for everyday driving. If I hauled adults in the rear seats on a regular basis I grab one though. Larry

I have my Mexican built 3500 4WD long bed dually for my truck, and an American truck with an American motor for my grocery getter - my Tundra! I'm sure the MegaCab meets someone's needs, but my 03 meets mine. I'm keeping a close watch on the 5-speed automatic that the Mega offers though.
