 My wife has a 2006 Mega cab that the Paint is very thin on it chips

real easy. The Dealer sent us to there Body shop to have it Tested the Paint shop said the paint is very thin. The response from Chrysler is not are problem

it is your problem. Boy I wish i would not have bought a new truck just about out of patience.

Help

There should be a specification for how thick the paint is, I'd think. If you could find that out and your paint is too thin, you might have a prayer. A small prayer, but at least a prayer! Good luck!

What color is the truck? Mine is silver and it has been thin from day one. All I have to do is look at it wrong to make it scratch ar chip easily. All I can say is I should own stock in Meguires products.

The Wifes truck in Patriot Blue this problem seems to be more of a Mega Cab issue. I have tested both and the quad cab four door trucks have more paint on them on average. Does anyone know where I can get the Chrysler paint Specs. All we want is them to stand behind there product.

All I can say is that Patriot Blue has always been a problem with Dodge. Mine also scratches easily. Years ago DC had problems with blue paint and they extended special "hidden" warraties to owners, but I haven't hear anything like it in years.

Getting a company's paint spec will be impossible unless you know someone "on the inside". Manufacturers (of which I am one) rarely ever publish inside specs.

BTW, "Wlecome Aboard!" Hope to see you around sometime.

This is a 3rd generation issue, from '03 to current. I was in amazement at the atrocious paint quality on my 2004. On my 1998 1500, you could practically toss a sledge hammer across the darn hood and seem to as much damage as if you only leaned up against the paint on the newer trucks. I have heard it is a U. S. A. /Mexico issue, but it isn't, Saltillo, Mex. is my assembly point, and my paint quality is terrible. If U. S assembled trucks are in fact worse, I would hate to see how bad they are. I have two-tone flame red, and leaves a lot to be desired.

My 07 paint sucks #@$%! . I know that black in general is more of a problem but this is ridiculas. I washed it today and am sorry that I did. I know a body shop really well and will see if they can tell me what the thickness should be from the factory. Short of rino lining the entire truck!

The paint on my early '01 Pat Blue truck was pretty darned thin, could see through to the primer on the tops of the bed rails.

It was a different story on my '03 though, the Pat Blue was plenty thick on it, and when I had the bedliner installed the shop had more difficulty than usual sanding the paint in the bed. . . said it as the thickest/strongest paint they'd come across in some time. Go figure.

D/C paint has always been "thin".

You got that right. My 94 has a large area on the right fender that you can sort of see through. I saw it when waxing it for the first time, and the dealer said they'd fix it, but I never took it back. I'm not that picky about appearance, and it was never convenient to be without the truck for a few days

I told the wife I was sorry I washed mine yesterday. It is covered with chips, and like the rest of you have said, I think it will chip and scratch just from looking at it wrong. :{ Mine is a flame red 05.

My '05 black single cab paint sucks. Needs to be waxed with every wash, and even so, there are sections on the upper cab, right above the driver side door on the cab, that is fading already! And a section on the hood and front fender!!!! Worst factory paint I have ever had on a vehicle. I'm almost thinking that I need to get the whole truck repainted just to get it looking good again.

My wife has given me the green light to buy a new truck if I want one, and I have to admit, I'm leaning to Chevy. At least they'll stand behind their trucks & warranties, unlike D/C. I refuse to spend $40K +, then after the paint falls off & the injectors fail have the dealer tell me "tough luck".

If I were going for a stock truck, I too, would probably buy a Cheby.

The first thing I noticed with my 06 was the thin skin all over and now the thin paint. If the quality control at DC doesn't improve, I guess I just bought my last DC product.

Total thickness generally runs 3-5 mils depending on the panel. Vertical surfaces are usually a bit thinner than horizontal. There are only a couple of OEM paint suppliers in the states, and I know more than one uses PPG who supplies most of the DC OEM finishes. The thickness is not going to make it chip less, if anything more thickness will show the chip over a thin surface. Adhesion and cure have more to do with it. I had all three of mine in silver and they held up very well.

I don't understand this thread... ... . Maybe this will help.....

The Dupont Imron paint that my BIL just bought for his airplane was almost $1200. for the primer and paint... . Just enough to do the plane... . not enough to do one of our dually quad cab trucks... Primer and Poly Urathane, maybe the best paint for one coat thickness, color retention and gloss money can buy, but can be easily damaged by rock chips because its so hard... .

The issue here is if we wanted this kind of paint from the factory they couldn't put it on... The EPA has forced the vehicle manufactures to put on a water based paint... . The new design water based paints don't give off much of VOC's when the paint is sprayed and cured in an oven... . This is the key factor to painting new vehicles... . These rules are so bad, that some vendors that I know have moved out of CA because they can't paint their products any more... VOC's = po po's in the air at the time the paint cures from the solvents...

Todays paints are a very good primer, 1 or 2 coats of color and usually 2 coats of a clear coat... this provides the layers needed for quality... . I own 6 trucks... . 2 Fords, 3 Dodge's and one Navstar... . they all have this paint system on them... . Our truck care is washing each truck at least once a week with hot soapy water... none will fit into a car wash so we have one of the guys do it... . except for scratches from belt buckles, being touched with the forklift, etc... the paints all look almost as good as the day they left the factory..... Once a year we usually buff them out with a buffer and a 3-M product I bought at the paint shop designed for buffing clear coats... .

The older trucks, each have over 240K miles each, have rock chips and scratches but for the way they are treated we're very happy..... I wonder sometimes if your not doing damage to the paint by using products to protect the finish that they are not designed to have on them..... Some of polishes sold today will destroy the clear coat... and shorten the life of the finish underneath... ... ...

Just my thoughts here...

When I picked up my '07 C&C , the dealer tried selling the extended warranty to me and when I declined the first thing out of his mouth was that there is no paint warranty once the truck leaves the lot. I looked it over good and then explained to him that I had bought 2 trucks in two years from him and if there is a problem,I'd fully expect him to take care of it! No problems with '05 or '07 so far.

Black '06 here, and paint leaves much to be desired as well. I bought the truck to use, but I can't hardly do any "truck" activities with it without doing major paint damage.

I took my chevrolet 4x4 offroad frequently on skinny trails with branches, briars, brush, etc. brushing hard against both sides. The paint would show these scratches, but after a good buffing, it looked good as new... really!

I've done some work in the new dodge at the farm, and noticed a deep scratch on the front fender that penetrated to the primer. I remember a small twig just barely brushing the fender, but certainly nothing that should have caused damage!

Paint quality is definately lacking on these new dodges compared to other vehicles I've seen...

Gentlemen,

I too am not very impressed with the paint on the 3rd gen trucks. Since purchasing mine (light almond pearl), I've looked closely at other colors. Some colors (metallic ones) seem to be spotty, paint isn't uniform throughout. Really looks bad on some trucks. In fact, I was warned by a friend who had a silver colored truck not to clay bar the paint on my truck. He said I'd be sorry because the clay bar cleaning would enhance the inconsistency look of the paint on my truck. Therefore, I opted to use a medium-cut rubbing compound instead, followed up by polish and wax. There are a few areas that look thin on my truck, but overall okay. I have several rock chips, although nothing worse than previous vehicles. However, I'm very careful not to lean too hard on the truck for fear I might ding it. Like many others have said: "I bought the truck for the Cummins, unfortunately it came wrapped in Dodge. "
