Bummer...

Wow, that's a major bummer about the only availability in the short box...

I'm close to maxxed out with my QC 2500 and will be contemplating upping the truck in a few years. I pull a 4 horse gooseneck with living quarters.

I'd have to say the Ford full quad cab dually is the rig of choice for hauling horses and people at the same time in the circles we run (ride) in. I was hoping that DCX would have something to compete with that rig!

I figure that once you're looking at a truck that long, a couple of inches longer wouldn't matter...

Thanks for the insight, PG!

I agree. The people buying this type of truck aren't using it for urban commuting where the length would be a daily problem.

This is just the Chrysler beancounters not wanting to manufacture another hydroformed frame just for this one style of truck. With the mega-cab short-bed combo they can get away with using the same frame as the current quad-cab long-bed. Everyone who wants a mega-cab long bed and/or dually should email Dodge and let them know there is strong customer interest in buying this combo. It can't hurt.

Does anyone know how GM's 4-wheel steering is selling? I do not hear that advertised anymore. Could that be an option to shorten a 8-Ft. Megacab Ram's steering radius??

Just thinking out loud.

I've heard reports that it isn't doing as well as GM had hoped.

quad steering costs way to much money with not enough benefit with and item that when it breaks could break the bank no thanks. now a dodge dually mega can 4x4 im in.

From what I've seen, they will be available in every configuration except a Dually and no 8 ft box.
Well, if that's the case, they've pretty well left the 5th wheel RV towing market (getting larger all the time with the retiring Baby Boomers!) to the competition! :( Nice going again, DC! :{

The real problem is overall length. The Ford Crew/8" box is 262 inches long, not counting the rear bumper. I drove one. It is a true highway driver, don't try to park it at WallyWorld. Turning radius is 58+ feet. The 4 door Dodge will be AS long if not longer. Just a thought

i have the pic that was taken off this board in my hardrive. i did some measuring to get the ratios and from there you can calc the d/f in size. these measurements are in millimeters and where measured off my computer screen.

quad cab vs megacab

-front door opening width 29 vs 27

-back door opening 20 vs 28

-front of sheat metal to rear of 72 vs 83

cab

-front of rear door opening to 27 vs 42

back of cab (tell all measure)

now if someone want to measure their quad cab we can find out how much bigger the new cab will be.

to anwer somones question about rear glass it is a larger opening but and it will not take up the entire new opening. behind the rear glass there will be about 8-9inches instead of what now is about 2-3 at most.

bottom line this will be the biggest cab available. what would this thing weight b/c our smaller quad cabs are heavier than ford right now.

I am not surprised to hear that GM's four wheel steering is not selling very well.

Another question I have, is. What is DC going to do about reduced towing capacities, and payload? I am assuming that this truck will be heavier than a regular QC? Will this not effect the truck's towing limits? What will DC do to improve it's towing ability, along with having the larger cab? Is this one reason for the new G56, which is presumably a lighter weight transmission?

I know, I am throwing out a lot of questions. I just see that if DC does not play it's cards right, they may be left in the dust by other companies!!

Dingdingdingding!!!!

PG -

Nail, hit, head.

You said it, brother. The folks that want that kind of room are the ones who are going to want to haul the big toys!!!

I'm not going to try to hide my disappointment. :{

I just shudder to think that my next truck might not have a Cummins!

Oo.

Lets roll

PG tell them to monitor this site and a few others and they will see what the working(everbody) man wants and what will happen if they don't follow thru. If they play there cards right they win the game. If they don't well they lose. There on a roll my so lets continue it.

I'm sure they made some sort of attempt at market research, even if they always seem to be ignoring us. :-laf It would be interesting to see how many SBs they sell versus LBs. It think that would give you some idea of their thinking perhaps.

Anyway, Obviusly the Mega-Cab will be for those who want more interior space and are ok with the short beds. I fall into that category. I use my truck for personal transportation and occasionaly hauling stuff, rarely (if ever) do I find something I cant put into my SB that makes me regret not getting a LB. The interior space though is definately lacking some so that will be a huge plus to me. Being able to seat two kids in car seats or two adults for long trips in comfort would be great. Having reclining rear seats and extra storage behind them is awesome. Plus, I don't have to listen to the Ford Blue Bloods screamin about Dodge's lack of a "real" crew cab. Now, Dodge will have the largest cab and the strongest powertrain. No such thing as too much space or too much power. :D

Take a look at the new Hummer SUT and the Avalanche. This is the market for this vehicle. Only we will have a decent size usable bed for really hauling material and be able to get a real diesel engine to motivate it. I'm sure that if the Mega-Cab is a success in any form, you will see a LB version shortly afterward. I think they are just making use of current production capacity to make a product that they think will sell the best.

On a related note I saw a blurry pic of a non-camoflauged future Ram on some car spy shot site (regular cab, long bed) and it was clear the front end was redesigned more like the current Durango and Dakota. Anyone know if this is happening for MY 2006 with the Mega-Cab intro or will it be later?

Working Trucks versus Mall Cruisers

Yep, looks like the mall cruiser market won this round! :(

I agree that DC needs to step up to the plate and offer a long bed, but... from a selfish perspective, this is exactly what I need. I use my truck as a daily commuter, weekend warrior and for running around town. I rarely go to the mall, but the one time a year I do, yes I'll take the truck.

I need something I can load up me, the wife, twin boys, a third kid someday, our yellow lab and all the in-cab stuff a family needs when heading out on the road. I also need to hook up a 16 ft utility trailer full of four wheelers or a 30 ft TT. The 8 ft bed I have now is great, but I'd gladly trade 2 feet of it for more interior room.

My wife drives a Suburban and the one time I loaded it with the trailer full of four-wheelers and headed down the road, the damn thing would hardly make it up a mild hill.

Again, I do hope they produce an 8 ft bed for those out there who truly need it.

Can anyone post a pic of the new look of the future Ram? Or perhaps a link to a photo?

I don't care for the look of the new Durango but I am interested to see how it will look on the full size Ram.

Thanks.

Ted

Aren't you looking for more than just a pickup? Huge crew cab, 6. 7 Cummins, 9-speed automatic with 25,000# GCVW -- sounds like a medium duty comercial truck to me.

Here in beautiful British Columbia, the Workers' Compensation Board has specifications for the size of the rear passenger compartment if the vehicle is to carry workers. The current quad cab falls short of the requirements. This new 'M" size will allow DC to compete in the logging, mining and petroleum industries. I read an article recently that claimed 50% of the Canadian DC 'Heavy Duty' truck sales were in British Columbia and Alberta. Maybe that is part of the target market for this extended cab truck.
