I know this forum is titled Engine and Transmission, but... The front springs on my new MegaCab seem awfully soft. I have to ease over speed bumps to avoid severe bottoming out against the bump stops. My 2003 4X4 Qcab was not that soft. Is this a common condition? Would aftermarket shocks help?

Never bottomed out my 06' Mega. I must drive slower. Isn't there 5 or 6 different spring rates for various configurations? Maybe a snowprep spring swap would work better for you.

Mine did the same thing until I put the 2" leveling kit in. Some guys go with Mopar 988 springs, which are a little stiffer. But the 2" leveling kit worked perfect for me and was cheaper than new springs, plus the truck still rides smooth down the highway. Scotty

i've seen carli suspension springs for sale for under $400 and a pair of 5100 bilsteins (part# BE5-6646-H5) could be found for $180 pretty easily.

That's a really nice front end set up for under $600. it will level the truck. pretty much any driveway mechanic could install this themselves as well. this set up will ride NICE on just about any terrain (not the Baja 500@70MPH) and if you keep wheel weight down... ... . tires 33" and below on aluminium wheels that is.

being a picky guy, i'd also get an adjustable track bar to keep the axle centered for another $380, but that's expensive and not really nessessary for the 1/4 inch discrepancy... . and rear bilsteins (part# BE5-6647-H1 and another $180)

our rear suspension is pretty good stock (minus the crappy shocks) but offroaders don't like the big leaf on the bottom of the leaf pack so... . for the rear if it's an issue... ... rear mini packs for $400 from Lorenz (or even used from another member for cheap)... ... not a bad kit and no single manufacurer gets to stick it to ya.

good luck, j

Been there, and done that!

My 06 mega cab has new 988's springs from the dealer. It rides fine!

the front end came up about 1 1/2" and NO BOTTOMING OUT!

you can search for this thread but bottom line there heavey duty spring and are OEM. Cost is $129. 00 each.

Hope this helps.

I'm looking into a levelling kit for my 07. 5 mega cab 4 x 4. What brand did you get. You sound satified. Thanks

Any idea if this would be covered under warranty? Does not sound like a stock truck should bottom out like that.

Great question. The spongy front suspension is the worst part of my new truck. My previous Dodges all had firm snug suspensions and I like that. I may complain to my dealer about the springs and see where that gets me. Nowhere probably. If I don't get dealer help I'll buy stiffer springs and install myself. I don't like leveling kits because then the rear end is low when towing the 5th wheel. Don't like the low-in-the-back look.

Thanks for all the good discussion. This is a great forum.

:-laf no they will tell you to slow down. The majority of new truck buyers want a passenger car ride,so the rest of us will have to build'em for what we like.

Thanks. this is the kind of info I need. The new springs actually lifted the front end eh? Wonder if it will settle any with time??

Unfortunately there are times when you can't jam on the brakes to slow down for a rough spot in the road. Where I drive, bumpy bridges and rough transitions from interstate roadways to bridges are very common. The bump stops take a beating. In my opinion bump stops should be a fail safe, not a routine working part of the suspension system.

I could also try being less picky, but that's why I buy new vehicles. With old school or homebuilt rigs one expects quirks and stuff.

I bought timbrens for the front to hopefully cure this problem... . short term until i get a kore / carli / something lift and bigger tires... . i dont have them installed yet, but you could search on timbrens and see what others say...

The real problem

Fifth wheel hitches almost never overload front ends of trucks. It is the load of addon front bumpers, quad cabs loaded with 4-6 persons and addon in the bed fuel tanks. In the days of the good ole Ford club cabs you could purchase the standard front end or a one ton front end. They were rated at 3800 & 4500 pounds. Ford had enough sense to give you a choice of front end. You can't get that now from DC except you order a snow plow package. Mega Monsters and and any quad cab DC should have stiffer front ends than a standard truck.

DC should give us a choice of a 5600-5800 front end at extra cost.

I installed CArli's front springs(progressive/leveling) with bilstien resivor shocks and it made a big difference. No bottoming out and i can hit a speed bump at 30 MPH. I have been with other lifted and stock trucks on a very bad pot hole infested road and left them way behind. It seems as the faster i went the more it smoothed out on the ruff stuff.

With the 988 Mopar springs, what shocks do you use, that seems like a great way to bring the front up a little and maintain a factory ride.
