From what I have been able to find out, the factory is not set up in such a way that they can handle the added length of the longer megacab with an 8 footer. The cost to retool the factory to sell a few trucks (in comparison to the volumes that are sold in the shorter versions) is not enough to justify until the next major redesign in 2009 or so. Until then, the sales numbers don't justify interupting the current production line to rearrange it to handle the longer frames for only 1 or 2 more model years. DCX knows they will sell, but they also know what it will cost them to make them.

I just sold my 04. 5 today. I want a larger cab for my growing family. So the megacab works, but I need the 8ft bed for work. Since I sold my slide in camper I want to go back to the 2500. Is the newer diesel coming out on a new frame with a crew cab?

Are you saying the Cummins is not a real diesel? Maybe I misunderstood your statement.

I guess everyone looks for something different. I need the 8 foot box but there is no way I want the Mega Cab in front of it. My Quad Cab is perfectly sized for our needs and still nimble enough to make it down those "roads" we need to haul trailers to while trail riding. After being in both the Ford and GM crew cabs I still prefer the quad... and yes I've sat in the back on a long trip in both the Quad cab and in Ford Crew Cabs! But if the short box worked for me I might think twice about getting a Mega Cab...

i read an articale in truck trend back when dodge unvailed the megacab and they said from the get go that they only came as a 4dr shrt bed no other choice reason was that they didn't have a long enough frame for the mega cab and the 8ft bed. thats actually why the cab is so big it was to fill in the gap between where a shrt bed and a 4dr would fit on dodges longest frame. truck trend did mention that the next body style would have a more regular sized 4dr (think they said it was going to be the same size as the fords who where currently the biggest) and an 8ft bed but that wasn't till the next body style.
