Keeping a lightweight Camper on FULLTIME!!!!

Neighbor is considering taking back his 5 day old 6. 5 mpg Powerstroke for a Megacab Dodge. He is concerned about the clearance of his 5th wheel trailer to the cab. Any problems out there? How do they handle the load with such a short box? Could he expect 10 mpg towing heavy? His camper is 32 ft and sometimes pulls a boat behind it.

Thanks

With my Pullright Superglide I can U turn with my 5er in the same radius as the truck will turn empty. No clearance problems with the cab at all. Without an automatic slider, you would need to release the slide latch before attempting a tight turn.

Loaded the 5er is 12,500lbs and 37 feet long. Just got back from LV-Boise ID-LV and averaged about 12. 5 mpg going 65mph all the way. Got 14 going up with a tail wind, and 10. 5 coming back into a headwind.

I agree with nps. With a sliding hitch he shouldn't have any problems. I love my SuperGlide.

I average between 10 and 12 mpg (hand calculated) when pulling my 5th. It all depends on how deep I have my foot into it! Oo.

I have some of my best friends, who I have the most resect for screw up their pu bed by not having the trailer at lease 7-10 in above the bed!!!! If all you are doing is going from RV park to park about 6in is ok. If you ever go into off road or a fueling station that has a steep driveway, good luck.

Thanks for the responses... ... ... ... . anymore? His new 6. 4 F350 dually returned 6. 5 mpg gallon towing and that seems to be the norm. He is not too happy.

Will the ford dealer actually take it back after he has towed his 5er with it?

there is a dealer in texas that is doing long bed conversions with the mega cab, cost around $7000 more for the long bed, but man does it look great, there was a link on the home page here

As much as I like the idea of a Long Bed MegaCab, what does it do to the geometry of the vehicle, such as ride and handling, towing and hauling. Chrysler spends a a ton of money engineering the characteristics of these vehicles. Does the conversion dealer do all this engineering?

This would be my problem with this conversion. I am sure they do a great job with the conversion, but I would have a hard time letting anyone chop up my new 45000 truck. :{

last i heard the engineers from DC have went to texas and looked over the conversion and have given their blessings and the warranty is gonna be honored

Leave it to Chrysler to build whatever they want and leave us with few options.

Ford has had crew cab dually shortboxes out for a while now. How many of those do you see?

I have an '06 mega cab & pull a 36' Cimarron horse trailer (gooseneck) Clearance is good but only because the trailer has a tapered nose. If the trailer nose were the full width of the trailer, tight turns would be a problem..... Also, avg mpg is about 12 when towing. A little better if I keep the speed under 65 and my foot out of the pedal.

Look how long it took DC to come up with a cab & chassis & it is pretty much a joke as far as capacity goes, why would they do anything sensible like a mega cab long box. As long as they are selling cummins p/u fast as they make em they just don't care. They have allready lost so much business that they could have stolen from ford 450 & 550 sales they are likely too darn embarrased to even listen to customers that have begged them for trucks that you can make a living with.

Why didn't they make crew cabs back in 91. 5? I have heard so many times from Ford crew cab owners they would have bought one back then but they only offered ext. cabs.

Dodge doesn't need a Mega cab. They need a TRUE (full size) crew cab. That's what most people want.

glhs: I like the way you think. :) I would buy a megacab with an 8ft bed, but a REAL CREW CAB with 8ft bed would be the best.

What's wrong with the 4 door Quad Cab? I'm perfectly happy with my 8 ft bed Quad Cab. I never haul anyone so big that I need a bigger back seat. It works perfect for me, even on a long trip. Besides, parking a MegaCab long bed at HomeDepot would be like parking a train.
