Where does the fitting go for a mechanical fuel pressure gauge?

If you mean what I think and are talking about the special banjo bolt. Most would install it at the VP44 fuel inlet port.

Given that the OP has a 1998. 5 24-valve Cummins/Ram in their Truck Profile, no tapped banjo bolts are required. Pressure can be measured either pre-filter, or post-filter by removing the plug from the appropriate test port on the top of the fuel filter housing and plumbing in the pressure gauge: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/mt_2_feb98/fuel_sys_comp.htm
