Why can't people drive?

I raced a Porsch

I think that the installation of a Cummins might break some gears! Some of those old model didn't have much horsepower but they sure were geared low. I did notice the absence of a 2WD LO kit though. :D

I saw one of the new Freightliner Unimogs at the local dealer a few months ago. I want one BAD but can't afford the $90,000.

I've seen 'Mogs for sale with the Cummins 5. 9 in it! It was a few months ago, but I can't remember the website. Usually you can spec which engine you want in any of the larger class trucks. Nowadays there are some sweetheart agreements, but that wasn't always the case.

The only problem with the older 'Mogs is the SLOW speed, like maxing out at 55 mph... ..... D'OH!

Their have only been a couple of the bigger mog models that have had Cummins put in them and they were done aftermarket. Good luck getting Mercedes to do it. A better question would be why would you want to. Don't get me wrong, I love my cummins! But they aren't the only company out their making good diesels. The OM352, OM366, and OM903? series diesel that Mercedes put into some of the bigger mogs is about a tough as they come. Their are literally millions in use today in every application thinkable. Not very bombable but that's buy design. Mercedes designs stuff to do a paticular job and do it well. You need it to do more... get a different motor. Use it within it's design parameters and it will serve you well. They do this for several reasons: fuel prices, tax laws, commercial vehicle laws, etc. Commercial trucks in Germany aren't allowed to go faster than about 50 km/hr so why design it for more than that.

dresslered,

The 404 you are looking at is a perfect canidate for the 3. 0 liter 5cyl mercedes car diesel. Several 404 owners on the mog list have done this and I hear it's quite an improvement. 16 to 17 mpg rather than 10 to 12 mpg and the ability to hold 55 mph up hills. Man I love mogs!

How long can it maintain oil pressure at those angles?

So you wanna talk Mogs?!

Can't seem to open the vid above, but the 404 variant is designed for 45 degrees up or down slope and a 30+ degree sidehill. I've seen 'em do some stuff that almost defies the laws of physics.

I've got a '66 Funkwagen (love that word!) Radio truck that spent most of its life with a German Panzer unit... building up an expedition camper in the back.

All of the 404's were gasoline (I think)... but they made a BUNCH of em... If I'm not mistaken, all the other models were diesel... . I've also got my eye on a 'lil 406... bitty lil deezul and a 20 speed transmission... it'll do about 43 miles per hour top speed... falling off a cliff! Climb like a mountain goat, though!

Gotta love all those shift levers sticking out of the floor in the pic David posted. One look at them and a potential thief will say, "Forget it!" Another plus: they'll keep your brother-in-law from asking to borrow it!
