Sirius and XM to merge

Wow - lucky Fox....

So many mergers. Does anybody ever consider what happens to the people that lose their jobs in mergers. Example, 2 viable companies both doing well, a merger comes along and now their are some duplications of jobs. Golden parachutes for some, welfare and unemployment for others. Is this what we really want??

If you remember what Richard Gere's character in Pretty Woman did for a living, it probably isn't to far off from reality.

I was to busy looking at Julia Roberts to remember what the guy did for a job :)

I see Julia is pregnet with her third now.

I was working for Pharmacia in the Chicago area when Pfizer bought the company. 2 years later, I was out of a job.

I'm a little fussy about who I work for, it took me 2 and a half years to find another job. In the interim, I did a couple of contract jobs, one that got cancelled because I did not want to go to jail (FDA violations. )

I'm pretty happy with the job I've got now.

It doesn't have to be a merger

My former employer (Xerox) decided to outsource 30 or so IT support accounts to Siemens Business Services. Siemens offered everyone affected a job doing the same thing but for a different company. about 40 people declined the offer and took the severence instead. Various reasons included no tenure starting at Siemens, Rep of Siemens of Quick to hire, quick to fire, and some just took that opportunity (severence pay of 1. 5 weeks for every year worked) to go find a job on their own. I am one of those who declined the offer.
