I read about members getting Dodge to pay for the kit needed to eliminate the the oil released by the blowby. I've just searched for two hours and can't find the thread and I need HELP.

My dealer stated that they would be glad to add the modification needed to remove the blowby bottle and reroute it back into engine, but, could not find any tsb or part number to do it. For me to get it done I need the number on the tsb or the part number.

I think I remember that the member that wrote it was from Wisconsin (or there abouts) and that he had his fan blow oil all over his engine when he was at 22 degrees incline.

My local dealer is willing but unable to find the specs needed to help me --- OR --- are they just playing dumb and putting the load back on me? At any rate, I will need some specific part or tsb number to call their bluff.

Thanks;

WOW! That was quick. I will give it to my dealer and let all know how they respond. My fingers remain firmly crossed.

Ya might wanna think twice about having the stealer do it... they have to do a lot of work, including removing the injection pump. Easier to remove the puke bottle yourself and extend the hose down to the axle or thereabouts. I haven't done this yet, and yes, my engine has puked oil 3 seperate times on steep inclines/declines. Over 1 gallon/time!! Another bad design we have to live with.

Thanks to Thomas I was able to show my local dealer the TSB and part number of the mod. They checked into it and said that I was out of warranty for it, but that they would do it if I would assume $100 deductable. I was hoping to get it for free, but getting the kit plus labor charges for $100 sounded better than the hassle involved of fighting the beauracracy, so I accepted.

Thanks also to snowchaser, but I think that the kit will recycle more of the oil and keep the underside of my truck as well as my 5er cleaner.

Probably not the best solution, but I can live with it.

Thanks again;

Skip, this TSB addresses a problem where oil runs out of the engine breather when your going down a real steep grade.

You still will have the breather hose (see between steps 14 and 15 of TSB), with its vapors coming out. Those vapors will still condense back into oil weather its in the bottle, or on the ground as it drips out of the hose under normal operation.

Unless I was having problems with oil leaking out while going down a real steep hill, I would not mess with it.

I have a "loop" driveway at my house. the side of the loop I use to come into the home is 20% downhill for 100 feet. I have never had a problem with oil leaking out at 20% grade. Even if I stop on the hill and let it idle, I don't show oil loss, in my 98. 5 or 2002.

This part of the driveway is so steep, I can't park the truck on it as it will slide in the stones down the hill. When I first moved in, we used to have to drive up this same hill to leave the house. I even used to pull a 24' sunline out of it with a 4x4 Dakota in 4 low :(

TSB

Just brought the truck into the stealer today for that TSB (and other things... . ). This is the second time I brought it in for this, and this time they are finally going to preform the TSB (after parts are ordered, of course!). The worst encounter I had with dumping oil was last fall running sweep for the Pro Rally in Houghton, MI. The roads were steep in spots, and where ever a car went off the course, we stopped. At the end of the event (500 miles) I stopped and watched the oil drop to the ground. I honestly thought I had put a hole in the pan there was so much oil everywhere. A couple of quarts later, I was able to drive the 300+ miles home.

Which is better, dumping oil out a "regular" beather, or dumping it out the bottle on the front of the engine? Personally, I don't like either, so once they get it fixed, I am going to lengthen the hose, and install a catch-can on the frame. It will probably be similar to the existing one, but it will have less holes, and it will be coming from the middle of the engine, and not an end. It will still catch oil, and still allow pressure changes. This is the best of the "cheap" fixes I could come up with.

Thread by TowPro made me do more research on the modification. Thanks to him I will not be getting it done. I thought that it would recycle the oil back into the engine thereby eliminating oil loss, and reducing mess under vehicle. After talking with my dealer again, they did say that the mod was covered under the 50k emmissions warranty so I would not have had to pay that $100 deductible, but they also confirmed that it would not save any oil --- just reroutes it further aft. Taking many parts off the engine and then replacing them to accomplish the installation is just asking for trouble, for little or no gain.

Thanks TowPro for saving me possible problems.
