Michelin LTX MS - Tread Squirm

I have 265 LTX A/S's on a 2WD 3500 QC Single Rear Tire... ... ...



I will be pulling a 10,000GVW enclosed car trailer ..... and may "someday" place moderate camper in the LONG bed... ... .



I've been trying to make something of the Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels reviews ???? The A/S evidently leaves something to be desired for wet traction... ... I live in rainy Western WA state.



On this 2WD Highway Truck what other tire should I consider, besides MICHELIN ???

If you want, search out the threads on the Michelin ltx/at2. People, who run them, inckuding myself, LOVE them. It has very good , quiet handling in ALL conditions, including rain and snow.

Dad's been running Michelins for about 20 years on his vans, pickups, mom's Excursion etc... ... Mostly XPS tractions, and lots of XPS ribs on steers. Whenever he went with a new set of tires, the vehicle(didn't matter which one) was squirmy driving down the road. It almost was like driving on marbles. After about 5000 miles or so, they "broke in" and straightened out, and drove nice.



Just drive it and hold on for a while, and I believe that they will straighten out and you will like them.

A couple of years ago, I had just put on a new set of Michelins. The first couple of times I was pulling my TT, while changing lanes on the freeway, it seemed like the rear end of my truck slid into the new lane before the front end did.



I was due for an oil change. ( I always had my oil changed at a diesel shop that I've known for a long time, and considered them to be quite honest They are more expensive than the local grease monkey, but they also look at brakes, etc, while it is there) He had expanded his business and bought an alignment shop which he colocated with the diesel service shop. I asked him to check the sliding rear end while my truck was being serviced.



The guy at the diesel shop told me hes tech said I needed ball joints, that they were getting pretty bad. I didnt buy his diagnosis, so I took it to a frame shop I knew in Seattle for a second opinion. They said to come see them in about 3 years, ball joints were fine.



After that, every time I was in for an oil change, trans service etc, they always recommended ball joints. However, except for just those 2 short TT trips, I never had the problem again. After reading this thread, Im convinced that my original thought of it being the tires was correct.



BTW, I don't go to that diesel shop anymore

Well - I had a chance to take the rig out today. I put 70 psi in the fronts and it did greatly reduce the tendency to sway. The sway seems to still be triggered fairly easily, but at least now I can get it back under control. I'll adjust the pressure up and down a bit from here to see if I can make it any better.

I just replaced my Michilens LTX with 150k on them. But most of my time is spent on the interstate. I was towing a 16' enclosed with a Harley and golf cart. They were down to 3/32. But I also rotated every 5k and kept the front end in align. When the 46 GN arrives I am sure I won't get that kind of mileage again. I ran 60 PSI in mine all the time but plan to run 80 with the big trailer

The size is 245/75-16 Load Range E ..... I am using the stock rims

When you ran a weight distribuiton hitch you are putting some of the weight to the front tires, If putting more air in the front does not help. Jack up the front and check your front wheel bearings for adj or a bad bearing--- Good lock

Are you talking the LTX A/S or the A/S 2??



I had a set of A/S and they were great under almost every highway condition except deep snow. I had over 120k on them when I traded the truck, they still had over 25% tread.



I wish I could get the A/S for the 04...

I have 74k on my OEM Michelins with no problems and they look like they will make 90. I run 54-66 lbs in the fronts and 44 to 70 in the rears. Mark

Steved, Opinions are like A-holes... ... ... ... everbody has one!!!!!!!!!!



After reading misc comments, surveys, articles and reviews, I concluded that the LTX A/S is not as good a wet traction/rain tire as other ALL SEASON Highway Tires.



I wound up ordering GENERAL GRABBER HTS Load Range E 265's from . onlinetires.com I will have them mounted, nitrogen charged, balanced, and rotated at ANY Discount Tire... ... ...

I often see someone post here asking for the best tire for their application and after reading all the TDR member's recommendations and warnings about cheap poor quality tires that fail they buy the cheapest low quality tire they can find or worse, a Communist Chinese or Korean tire.

Each to his own.

After having Generals on two vehicles, you couldn't give me a set. Dry rotted on the car, poor mileage, high rolling resistance, just to name a few.



My post wasn't "opinion", it was experience. The A/S was on of the best tires I ever owned.

MR Barlow, Why dont you tell is how you REALLY FEEL about the Chinese and other Asian cultures... ... ... ... . BTW, As I'm a in country Vietnam vet, I hope Im never faced with the choice of having to buy anything mfg in Vietnam... .....

Steved, Regardless of your past experience with GENERAL tires, that isnt the case with the GRABBER HTS by all accounts Ive read... ... .



I will have to face nyself everyday, knowing that I acted out (buying these lousy tires) in spite of your well meant advice. How will I ever forgive myself for my sins... ... ... ...

Harvey is definitely articulate enough to defend himself, however I don't believe he was attacking any Asian culture. I believe he was attacking the general poor quality of goods made in China and most other Asian countries. There are very poor quality items made in our own country as well, so it's not an exclusive club by any means.
