If you look at the tread pattern of the XPS Rib and compare it to the XPS Traction, you can see pretty clearly the difference in tractive abilities. Yes, the XPS Rib all around would likely give better fuel mileage, but they aren't going to have as much straight-line traction as the XPS Traction in adverse conditions - that's a trade-off only you can decide.

For my 2WD dually that is used almost exclusively for RV towing, my thinking is Ribs on the front axle, Tractions on the rear when tire replacement time comes around.

Well, now that the bleeding has stopped since I bought 6 new XPS Tractions for my truck, I thought I would report. I have been running Bridgestone VSX "V-Steel" 235's for the past few years. When I went to our local tire store to take my snow tires off and buy 4 new VSX's they were sold out. The VSX's were a very durable tire. I drive about 40% of the time on logging roads and the biggest challenge is staying flat free. The VSX's have proven to be very durable so I was ready to buy them again but only one in stock. You might be thinking, just go down the street to the next tire shop but it doesn't work that way here. I live on an island that is an 8 hour ferry ride from the mainland of northern British Columbia. So I got talked into 6 new XPS tractions. After 1000km of mixed highway and logging road travel on the new tires I am very impressed. They are a great handling tire probably due to the stiffer sidewall and provide great off the pavement traction. We'll see how they withstand punctures with 25000km on them when the time comes but for now I continue to be impressed, the ride is much better than the Bridgestones. :)

XPS Rib are also great on the 5th wheel. Discount Tire on Albuquerque's West Side gave me a better deal on a set of 5 then Costco.

You can run the Ribs or Tractions on your 4X4. The Tractions, as I'm sure you've realized are an aggressive tread. The Ribs are more like a steer tire (no aggressive tread). Unless you run solely on pavement "I" wouldn't recommend the Ribs for the rear. Some have combined the tires by running the Ribs on the front and the Tractions on the rear. With 6 tires this is not the greatest setup regarding rotation. Just FYI, I've been running Tractions on all 6 and expect to get about 65K out of them. Hope this has helped.
