Any Ram guys in SE Florida?

Good Dodge Mechanic in N. Alabama?

I read in one of the service manuals, I think on the 01's saying the valve adjustment was no longer needed... we was gonna do Joe's one day and saw that and didn't do it. I'll check the software copy I have of the 03 service manual and see what it says.

We ain't scared of no rag neither. "A clean tool is a happy tool!"

Yeah, the 03 manual says the same thing, but you know me...

I'm goin to Joe's today for tires. Gonna let my truck mate with 'ol smokey while it's there... maybe mine will have some smokin' fast offspring in the spring when she calves.

You oghta get you a ride while you are there. Get joe to take you down the street.

He called me yesterday all hot and heavy over your "Big tires" :D Said he was looking at some hawss cats!

Remember hearing and think meacham has said too. He has done several and usually didn't need nothing or maybe loosened up a little. Worry wart!

Andy - I'd be glad to stay and help clean up. Put me on the list. ;)

I'm married, so what's the hurry to get home? :-laf I'll be glad to stay for clean-up detail too.

Side note...

Fella at work (prick) says that his 1st gen injector pump was spraying all under the hood, but the engine ran fine. He took it to his "guy" who sold him a rebuilt pump and installed for $1,800. (Sorry Meacham, I didn't hear about it till it was a done deal, but I gave him your # for future. ) Could a person repair or rebuild his own pump?

If Cummins tells me to quit adjusting the valve lash, then I might consider it. DC still thinks the lift pumps are okay and that DW is a fiction. :-{}

The only way to find out if it is necessary is to go in and measure it. If you 2001 guys check yours at 50k and then 75k and then 100k and nothing changes, then I'll agree, don't check it anymore.

I run mine a tad snugger than spec. And I adjust them ALL to that spec. Lots of discussion and reading on here a few years back.

Really glad I adjusted my 12v the last time--one was getting too tight.

I suppose my 24v is due. The problem is that the engine needs to be stone cold for a proper adjustment. There are "warm" specs, but I don't do it that way--per the advice of techs much older and wiser than I.

Just trailer the truck in.

Or git there real early and raise your hood. If the coolant is down around 140, we're probably okay on our motors--especially if you're using Cummins specs.

The older wiser fellows were not diesel mechanics, but racers/pro techs on gassers--with lots of aluminum. Aluminum probably expands more than iron, but I'm not a metallurgist. Somebody look that up.

So bring your feeler gauges and new gaskets for them 12v jobs--if'n you haven't already replaced those. My originals went 170k. drip drip.

I can't commit to being there at all, but if'n I am, I'll try to latch onto one project or the other and keep it moving--get everybody greasy.

Well, rollin on 35's now. They look real real good... Underwood tire did me right for sure. Thanks Joe!!!

Gap showed up and took me out in Ol' Smokey. Man, she ran like wildfire till Gap turned her into O'l Brokey. :( I got to test out the traction of the new rubber dragging Smokey back to her parking spot. They get a good converter on that truck, and tweak everything else, she's gonna send some people packin!! :D Another Wild Wild Ride. I love it!!!

That's not fair..... you didn't tell us what broke! :{

OH, my bad... It was that old "used up" purple converter that they put back in for troubleshooting. We drove about 10miles, made it juuuuusssstttt to Joes driveway before it gave way. I didn't have to drag it far. :)

HEHEHE, poor used abused TC! We expected it. It's floating alot of crap around the transmission right now. Making the valves stick on the valve body so it can't build pressure. Dave showed us some tricks on the valve body (or how it works). We used them to get it running, it's just limping along. Almost completely destructed. Dave playing with some more converters for us. Trying to figure out how to get her looser down low, but tighting as the rpm's go up. He's got the tight figure out, just too tight.

You got to get your new tires dirty anyway. Thanks for the 20ft tow :D Took us longer to hook the strap up than it did to pull it up the parking lot. Timing issues somewhere still I think. She is popping up top, about 4200rpms. She has gone 5krpms before. May have to give her a few more degrees, like to be able to get an easy 4500 out of her anyway. Thats enough for what we want to do.

Checking in and seeing what's going on. Glad to see Ol' Smokey is slowly coming back to life. Mine is just sitting in the garage. Going to get it out tonight for old times sake!!

Hey Mark, I've been around a little bit. Out enjoying divorcedom.

Won't be able to make the 9/10 CCD Meeting. See above statement.....

Valve Adjustment

Just checked in the manuals for recommended valve adjustment. This is the recommended milage: 12v 24,000 miles, 24v 150,000 miles, 24v Common Rail 150,000 miles. (When I was with Cummins, We would recommend every 50,000 miles after the first adjustment on the 12v engines. )

. 010 intake . 020 exhaust

Yep that's what the books say. I say you might consider a shorter interval with "high performance" applications. And there's a bit of controversy on the actual lash setting. I think I've gone as tight at . 006, but last time I figgered . 008 would be good enough. I was raised on manual valve adjust--I had German cars.

Mark I've got the stock elbow that came out of my HX35 and I'll have the one that's drilled to 32psi free by next Saturday. I guess you'll need one quicker than that though right?
