Got a phone call today from a guy wanting to buy my truck. Don't have an ad out or anything, he just saw it and tracked down my number. I told him I really like it, and it's my baby, but everything is for sale, and if it's worth more to you than it is to me, it's yours..... for $12,500. That would be enough to get me into a (don't be mad ) 97 extended cab 4x4. What do you guys think, should I sell it if he calls back? I'm not budging on the price. What would it take to part with yours? I do love my truck, but like I said, everything is for sale, and I would really love an extended cab. Plus all my buddies that I taught to work on diesels have bought 2nd gens and it's only a matter of time before I'm the bottom man on the totem pole as far as power goes, and we just can't have that.

Oh yeah, even if he doesn't call back, it sure makes you feel good to have someone want to buy your truck that bad.

Even if you are only THINKING of selling someday you should let the truck go if he is willing to pay that much. I sure would. Who knows, the circumstances might not be in your favor when you decide to sell later on.

And yes, this potential buyer has already given you the ultimate compliment on your truck!:)

sell or not to sell

I heard the comment that a cowboy only sells his saddle once in his life time. If you like the way the saddle feels and couldn't replace it, maybe you shouldn't sell. If you had a great time building your truck and could make a few bucks on the deal along with putting together an even better ride (saddle), by all means, move to the next level. You may miss the truck when it is gone. As in be "careful what you wish for, you may get it".

Personally, I just can't get enthusiastic about the new style trucks. Every time I see one with the plastic falling off the front bumper and the other things that show the basic nature of the second gens, I appreciate the long service I have already gotten from my first gen that is serving me so well. My brother has a 99 that I could just start driving, but I stick with the 93. I could have a P pump, but I stick with the VE. I have got a 4500 but I am using a getrag. There is just something about the first gens that holds my attention.

DONT SELL

I had a 89 3/4 ton 318 that I should have kept but I sold it cus I had a dumb@ss attack. (shoulda put a CTD in it but I didnt have the diesel bug at the time) I had the chance to buy a 90, totally redone with 230xxx miles for more than what I paid for my 01... Now Im looking for a 1st gen because they are rare around my area and I like the tough bada55 look of them! you see TONS of 2nd gen rams around and they all look the same but the 1st gens slowly fading out still catch my eye  Personally Id say keep it your truck is in awesome shape from what I can see!

Although I really like the first gens, I would sell at that price and get a 97.

The inside comfort is a big plus, and you'll have a very easy time getting back to 300 ponies that's for certain.

Plus accessories and parts are easier to get for a 2nd gen.

Of course you would lose all this great company. :D

Just my opinion.

You know, I had thought of this. Seems like you find quite a bit of bickering and flaming on some of the other boards, never have run into much of that in here. I'd have to hang around in here just to get my fix no matter what truck I had. Ok, I'm having second thoughts. Here is what I'm thinking: I need an extended cab if we ever have kids, and I'll never find a good looking 1st gen extended cab. I really want a transmission that I can tow in 5th gear, and I really can't justify the amount of money it would cost to put a 4500 in mine. I would really love the added power of the P pump, and the 2nd gens are a lot more comfortable. BUT I had this weird dream last night that I was in a parking lot looking for my truck, and I walked up to another first gen that looked just like mine, which never happens where I live, 1st gens are rare. My interpretation is that I'm worried about losing my originality, there are a TON of 2nd gens out there, and they do all look the same. BUT another thing I'm thinking is that I'm just about done with the stuff I want to do to this truck. I'm the type that always needs something to tinker on, and when I get done with my projects, I get really bored, and tend to neglect the finished product. My jeep is that way. Spent years and years with that as my main "project" and now that it's done I never even drive it. It hasn't been out of my garage since I went on vacation 4 wheeling in Colorado last August, and it probably won't come out until next August. I can barely justify owning it. I don't want the same thing to happen to the truck. Any more advice or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I know I'll miss this truck if I sell it... . Sorry for the novel

towing with the getrag

Being fwd AND 300HP, you can definitely put a strain on the old getrag, however, I have towed 15 thousand pounds (more on occasion) about 225k miles with my 93 and most of that was in fifth gear. I have done some minor service to the transmission but nothing major. The truck has more than 450k miles but I come home empty. I use 85AW and I keep it full (overfull). If you will use the lead foot lightly while towing, I think you can run in fifth all you like.

IF you take your time and get the parts together, you can do the 4500 for less than the price being quoted by companys who sell the package. (Second gen trucks are being crashed every day and the parts are getting more available. There are close to a million of them running or dead) Be advised however that the 4500 still exhibits some OD problems. From the standpoint of service, you might do better with an add on overdrive and stay in direct with the getrag.

"never find a good looking extended cab" Are you saying that they don't look good to you or that you don't see them in your area? They are definitely available and I do like the looks of them. I am working on a crew cab as I need more space than the extend cab offers. (No small children but I do have a wife and Jack Russell dog that travel with me. The JR needs a whole seat to himself)

Edit

"I'm just about done with the stuff I want to do to this truck. "

I didn't know there WAS an end to doing things to these trucks.

When I try to tow heavy loads in 5th it jumps out. I know this means bad news eventually. As for the 4500 5th gear nut problems, I've already welded one, and I wouldn't be afraid to do it again. I don't mind the look of the 1st gen extended cabs, I prefer the look of the 2nd gen extended cab, but the 1st gens are impossible to find in my area. And I know I'll never be completely done, there will always be general maintainence, but as far as upgrades and improvements I'm not too far away. A new turbo and a 4500/5600 would be about as far as I'm looking to go right now, and a 97 essentially gives me both of those things, plus lots more potential. But I'm very attached to what I have, it's taught me everything I know about diesels. Man, decisions like this suck, maybe he just won't call back and that will make the decision for me... ...

Bear with me on this. I used to have a First genner as it was my first diesel. When the new body style came out, I decided that newer was better. Took it for the test drive and is has "a little" more power. After all, newer is better, right? WRONG ! :{ I have been kicking myself in the ***** ever since. I went through 3 other diesels trying to get back to like the one I had. I never did find one that pulled like it or had its class. Dont get me wrong, the others were fine, it just wasn't MY BABY. If I had the chance to do it all over again, there is no way I would sell the truck.

If you feel that money can replace that feeling of : 1. Knowing what you have... . 2. Knowing how reliable your truck is... ..... 3. Knowing that you can go anywhere in the U. S. with a turn of a key... ... Knowing that all the hard work to get the truck that you have to where it is at today.....

If you can give all that up, then by all means ... sell it.

Good luck

If the truck he wanted and the truck he now has were the same configuration then I'd vote to keep his current truck. But AJ indicated in his first post that he would prefer an extended cab model. Sometimes our truck needs change and it makes sense to "upgrade". I have a club cab now, but it won't suit my needs much longer as my kids are growing and will need more cab room and a smoother ride. That's why I'm keeping an eye on the 3rd gen 4-doors, even though I'm quite concerned about the electronics & the build quality issues (ball joints, paint, thin sheet metal, etc).

front axles

this is a good subject guys I also have a 92 cc 2wd ! I keep thinging I want tomake it a 4x4 ! $2500 to $ 3000 should do it ! nice dana 60 front axle with hubs < 205 xcase < nv4500 ! I could do it !! but then maybe I should just buy a 12 valve 2nd gen ??? but ? guys please tell me is the front axle ,kind of punnie ?? what about the xcase ?? is it punnie? I like my truck but I want a 4x4 ??? man what should I do ??

i looked around for a few years for a diesel 4x4 pickup. i asked owners and mechanics a lot of questions and came to the conclusion that dodge was the route to go because of the ctd. . when comparing first gen to second gen. i came to the conclusion that the ist gen are much stronger in the front end and much simpler to work on. 2nd gens have alot of brake problemc too. 1st gens are more utilitarian ,less comfortable, but i think less prone to mechanical problems than the newer trucks. they are built like a truck, not a cartruck like all the newer trucks built to ride nice. i heard the 2nd gens are 1500 puunds lighter than the 1st gens. good first gen 4x4 clubcabs can be found but only in 92 and 93. i think they command a premium price but they are worth it. hold on to your truck and enjoy it until you need to sell it. i think you are driving one of the best trucks ever built.
