Well in a couple of weeks it's going to be a year that I've owned the truck. In that time I've sold my car trailer and stopped riding and racing offroad motorcycles so now I have this awesome truck and absolutely no way to justify owning it. I've got no bad vibes and my mileage hovers around 18mpg. I filled the truck up last week for the first time since Thanksgiving so that will tell you how little I drive it. Most of the miles I've driven were on road trips to and from my friends lake house about 250 miles away. Shoot I didn't even drive it in the snow this winter because I didn't want to get any salt on it. I just keep driving my little beater car to and from work.

Would you keep it if you were in this situation? :{

If you were to sell it what price should I realistically ask for it?

It's got 9000 miles on it and it's got a LINE-X liner, a tonneau cover as well as everthing else you see in my sig below.

Well, IMO it would come down to your finances. Obviously, it doesn't make sense to pay for something that you don't use, especially if you could put that money towards something more productive. I'm going through the same thing right now with my atv. I love it, but I never ride it so it is going up for sale. If money were no object I would keep it, but I can think of a million better things that I could put that money towards and every time I go out into the garage and see my atv I feel guilty.

I have the same issue with my motorcycle. I have had it a year and have put only 2200 miles on it. The last one I had I put 6500+ miles on it in 8 months. Love the bike but I cant just have it sit. :{ Here is my baby. 2003 Aprilia Mille R Haga Replica. Only 60 in the US and 300 worldwide. The below picture is Not my bike, but it is exactly like it. The guy leaning on it is Haga, the guy who raced the bike for Aprilia in 2003.

Pop always told me growing up his cars,trucks,4 wheelers, motorcycles, travel trailers,5th wheels, etc, etc, etc were all for sale. He said I never fall in love with any of them there's aways another one down the road. Of course he made his living buying, selling, and trading. Most of these item will continue to depreciate with time. There again real estate usually will appreciate with time in most cases.

If your not using it send on down the road if the price is right for you, and your buyer.

Tony

Finances as well- but if you have the money to pay it off keep it! just think the next time you want to haul osmething you wont have your truck. Id say just leave it be the way you are going now and let it sit. youve already made a years payment on it and you MIGHT get what you paid for the rig back but youre more likely to get less so youve just thrown out your money.

Its a nice rig. KEEP IT !!!

and if you do decide to sell down the road it will have LOW LOW miles on it and people will be fighting over it!

If you do decide to sell..... Ill take it off your hands for 20K :-laf hahah that wont happen but its worth a shot

The local dealer has a 04. 5 yellow CTD 4door short bed sport with the polished aluminum rims..... Hmmmm I like it alot! but love my 2nd gen

Keep it!

Ian

I don't tow anything with my truck. My wife and I fell in love with it. I thought about selling it, but that would just break my heart.

Keep it.

BP

I don't have anything to tow yet either, but plan to. In the mean time I just like driving the truck. So, unless it's a money issue, I would keep it.

If finances permit I would keep it as a long term investment in good, capable, reliable, transportation. You don't plan on making the beater your "good" car do you?

Maintenance and upkeep on the beater can quickly get out of hand also.

I am kinda in your shoes. . I bought mine to tow but last year didn't do so much. It still gets better mileage than my little Ranger did.

I too didn't race any last season and am not sure if I will this one either... I like my truck so much I am thinking of selling the RM and putting ALL the funds into the truck.

Hobbies change and in a couple more years you may wish you still had it. Instead of hauling the race bike and TT to the events maybe this year it will be more camping.

Might think about selling as they are giving the new one very steep discounts! Got mine 3 weeks ago and 46k sticker for 36,400. Not the best time to sell but a great time to buy!

I am pretty sure Road Armor makes a big damn bumper for these! ;)

On edit: Ooops... . Keep the truck or you'll be missed in TDR.

You know what your problem is????? It's LIFE. The stuff that happens while we are making plans. You are not at all alone, most everyone including my self has faced the same thing. Life forces us to make changes, and what a boring world it would be if it didn't. At the time you bought the truck, you had a need and a plan to use it, Now things have changed and you may or may not have to adjust to the changes? Most everyone has gone through these same kind of LIFE changes. It's not going to matter five or ten years from now, if you keep the truck or not, so do what you feel is the right thing to do. I think alot of people make the mistakes(?) as you, buying a very nice and expensive truck, with big plans. Then thing change, the truck they were going to take to work everyday and on the weekends pull there race trailer around, become to nice to drive every day. They like it so much, and have to work so hard to pay for it, that they start acting funny. They refuse to drive it in the rain, don't take it down town or in areas where it might get touched or damaged. They only drive it on "Special" days, it becomes a very expensive hobby and they can not wait till the UPS or FedEx guy comes with the latest new thing or widget. You enjoy working on the truck and adding accessories to the point that it rises to more then just a TRUCK, it's now your special, bigger then big, only one like it in the world Dodge Cummins truck. Trust me, it is more common then you think, and I would bet that everyone that reads this can in some way relate. Now you are at a cross roads, you know longer have a USE for the trucks justification, you are tired of going to work in a beater, and you could do so much more with that extra cash every month, sound about right? Every one has gone through the same thing at least once. Do what is right for you, if that means selling the truck then sell it, if it means keeping it then keep it. I went through the same thing many times, and to be honest I still do on occasion. I have almost no reason to justify my trucks existents. I continue to pour money into it, and very seldom take it out for a ride, so why keep it? Not sure why, just I know I would miss the dam thing an awful lot if it was not there. Good luck with your dilemma.

Thanks Everyone!

It feels good to know that I'm not the only one caught in this dilemma.

By the way NICE BIKE NNelson I'd love to one of those for a spin.

I've owned a pick up truck of some sort all my life and now I'm faced with the decision of keeping her or sending her off to someone who will enjoy her more. The truck itself is definitely not the issue. This truck ROCKS! :D :D and TDR is one of the big reasons why I bought it. The support that everyone gives here is great. Thanks Everyone

Looking at the big scheme of things I'll probably put less miles on it this year than last. I drove it all the time when I first got it, but now I pretty much use it just for trips down to Lake Norris in Tennessee or picking up odds and ends at Lowes or Home Depot. Going without a truck would be like missing the chuck key to your drill... don't realize how much you miss it until it's gone then you can't believe what an inconvenience it ends up to be.

Affording the truck is not a problem, but weighing the odds of owning it and insuring it against buying a new car that I could drive all the time instead of the beater and then buying an older truck to use that you don't care if it sits for weeks on end in the driveway. I've also thought about going "truckless" (yes, you can question my sanity on that) and just buying a small utility trailer to pull behind the car when I do need to haul anything. I'm still unsure about what to do.

A lot of this depends on what I could realistically sell the truck for in the current market. I've seen trucks of the same age and close mileage go for 36K down to 28K. People ask that much but what it truly sells for is a different story.

What do you think I could get for it?

If you're having to sell it - and have made that decission based on practicallity... . sell it for what you need to sell it for and what similar trucks are being listed for..... in the local truck trader mag's, in the local paper, and what (if any) the ones here on the TDR might be going for.

Someone might be looking for that exact truck, and unable to find it - thinking they have to do the wait for one from the factory... .....

Won't know 'till ya give it a whirl :)

Best wishes for you. :)

Just heard on the news that sales of full size pickups is down 2% due to rising fuel prices, so buyers this Spring and Summer are in for some nice rebates and discounts.

Torque King Jay - here's what you need to do. Get rid of that beater, and start driving your CTD every day and enjoying it. As Y-knot said, sometimes people get toys they like so much, they put them on a pedestal and are afraid to use them - so they sit. This is totally stupid. It's not a $300k Ferarri, it's a TRUCK. Use, drive, and enjoy it. It's made to take a little road salt, a few bumps, and pull some trailers, not sit there and look pretty/be babied.

I did the exact thing you're doing once when I was a little kid. I got a new and very expensive leather jacket. I only wore it on 'special' occasions and did more looking at it than wearing it. Guess what happened? I outgrew it and the thing went to waste/was handed down. Point is - don't waste your time waxing and drooling over it, get rid of the beater and drive the CTD! Treat yourself to a little luxury! As hard as we all work we deserve it!

Maybe I'm missing something, but why can't you drive this truck all the time? The only scenario where it makes sense to NOT drive it is if your commute to work is only a few miles, and the diesel never gets to fully warm up. In that case, maybe trade in your Cummins for a Hemi to better fit a lifestyle of many short trips.

However, whether you sell it or trade it, you are not going to make out financially due to that 1st year depreciation hit.

i'm in the same boat with my 2001,i keep putting money into a truck that as of today has only has 15000miles on it( i drive 15yr old beater as well to work). I bet i'v put $10,000 into it,but it makes me happy taking it out for a drive once in a while. I don't spend my money on anything else and i enjoy working on it. My wife says that when i do drive it i have this little smarta-- grin on my face, like a little kid at Christmas. The decision is yours, mine i consider a exspensive hobby, but heck i don't smoke ,seldom drink or spend money on anything else,my truck is my addiction. I work long days, minimum 6 days week,so the time i spend with my truck is my gettaway time from this crazy hectic lifestyle nowadays. Do what you feel is best and stand behind your decision,Most of the people i know will buy a new vehicle every couple of years, drive the snot out of it,then sell it ,take a depreiation loss and move on--there usually the first ones to complain about how nice a rig you have there and are mostly jealous. I made the decision to buy this truck and keep it for at least 15+ years,so thats why i want to take extra care of it. Best reguards in your decision.

tough decision...

While I dont envy you at all for the decision you are facing, atleast you had the CHANCE to own a beast like that, ya know?

On a side note, do you no kidding get 18MPG with the 325/600? I am looking for a 4. 5 2500 SWB, I like the 6spd and am tired of 4. 10's and was thinking of 3. 73's. I get 18 highway now, so heck, if you get that with a LWB... . wow.

Pricewise I would dare say you are still sitting on a solid $36,000 of truck. Look at the avg price of similar trucks here and on autotrader and go from there.

I'd take her off your hands for ya but I dont need the 3500 or the LWB.

Good luck!
