I had a '74 200 4X4 with the 345 V8. It got just over 7 MPG in local driving and had a 16 gallon fuel tank. During the gas crises of that era, it certainly wasn't a long range vehicle. It had about the same range as a modern electric car.

Don, The best way to improve your fuel mileage is do what Furd owners do, lie about it. That's what my brother- in-law does with his 08 super duty.

Yep, that's the cheapest and most practical way to improve fuel economy and the greatest advantage is the flexibility it allows. If you make a wild-eyed claim and your brother-in-law or neighbor or fellow union member claims a higher number you just come back a few days later and claim an even higher number. It works great. Lots of TDR members use this method also.

At least you had a tough old engine. The disaster engine was the AMC 400CID V-8 they used for a time in light duty trucks when I-H was short on V345 and V392 engines. During the gas crisis at that time, I owned a '74 Chevy C10 with a 454 and my mileage was about like yours. It had dual factory tanks and I added a 50-gallon in bed tank to increase my range towing a 27' Airstream TT we had at that time. It too would pass everything but a gasoline station.

That truck was no power house. It couldn't pass anything but an occasional gas station. A modern Dodge running on 2 cylinders could keep up with it.

I could have been one of those who passed you. At that time I was driving a company supplied '72 I-H Travelall with a V392 engine and a 4-bbl Holley carb towing a 20' Mobile Scout travel trailer. The Travelall had dual factory fuel tanks and it need 'em. It would pass everything, but a gas station. :-laf

As you know, I had one also. 392 power!!!! Was looking for a picture at break and stopped at this one. . I love the statement on the bumper!!!!!

I just did a round trip from eastern PA to central WY pulling my Land Cruiser on the way out and was getting 11 miles per gallon. I had to vary my speed because the wife was driving a U-Haul that would down shift going up or down the hills unless she got a run at the hills. On the return doing the speed limits in the different regions it kept improving until I got 17 in Western PA doing 65.



It gets the same mileage as my 2005 2500 did with the G56 and 3. 73 gears, after the switch to ultra low sulfer diesel when it never did any better than mid teens empty and 9-11 pulling a 30' 5th wheel with an 11K gross depending on the wind.



So far I am very happy with the new truck.
