Mild BOMBing Setup for Towing

Who's From Florida Running in GA June 23?

Spring Keeper on Ovrloads,Necessary?

As shown in my signature, we'll be ordering a 2002 3500 ETH/DEE for towing our 13,500# 5th wheel. I'm looking at some mild bombing to increase usable towing power but also to keep EGT's in check. In addition to the obvious boost/EGT gauges, I've already picked up an Edge EZ and am considering 275 injectors, 4" exhaust and doing something with the air intake/filter system.

Am I on the right track? Considering that we will have the 4. 10's, is this a setup that the stock clutch can handle? I really would appreciate any suggestions if I'm off base with this setup. :)

I think you are on the right path... but be aware that a stock ETH reported high EGTs a few weeks ago. Gauges are good for any level of BOMBing.

DD1's and an EZ is a super combination. 275's are good, but are not a balanced set of injectors. The DD injectors are all balanced within 1% of each other, which results in a very smooth running engine. Expect to gain about 50HP with just the DD1's, or about 30-40 HP with the 275's. 4" exhaust will definately help, and be sure to install gauges. May even want to consider a trans temp gauge on your 6-speed if you are going to be towing a good portion of the time. I added one on my truck, even though I rarely tow anything. I towed an 8,000 lb trailer with my ETH when it was stock, and saw EGT's no higher than 1,200°. Boost was at 23 lbs. This was while going up some steep grades, up to 8%.

i don't see why anyone would want 4:10 gears except with a lift and big tires. let that cummins pur, does better at lower rpm's. heck i wish i had another gear in my trans.

Good Reason for 4.10's

Cummins Cowboy,

The 4. 10's give a GCVWR of 21,500 lbs and a "trailer tow rating" of 14,700 lbs. The same truck with 3. 54's has a GCVWR of 20,000 lbs and a "trailer tow rating" of 13,200 lbs. Our trailer has a GVWR of 13,500 lbs - too heavy for the 3. 54's rating.

With more attention being paid to combined weights of large 5ver rigs and the legal implications of being involved in an accident (regardless of who is at fault) or even being stopped for weight checks in an overloaded rig, we're getting the 4. 10's strictly to be legal anywhere in the U. S. or Canada when pulling our 5ver.

I've been in contact with U. S. Gear - they will soon have a 20% OD available for the 4x2 NV5600. I plan on installing one for use when not towing as well as for "gear splitting" while towing.

Rob, with the stock retarded injection timing of the 24v ISB, I'm not surprised that a stock ETH might run excessively high EGT's while towing. I would think that, by advancing the injection timing back to where God and Clessie intended for it to be before the EPA got involved as well as by increasing air rates through the use of the boost elbow and module, the Edge EZ could be helpful in reducing EGT's. Of course, the higher fueling rates would work to increase EGT's at the same time, so maybe the net result is a wash. :)

ETH Towing EGT's under control

Rusty,

After having the PE EZ and 275's and now the PE Comp and DD3's I would suggest the PE Comp. I do alot of towing and am also Bombing a little here and there. The Comp is great as you can adjust it to the conditions. On level 1 it is the same ae the PE EZ with more adjustment to the low RPM/Boost smoke level. One other great feature is the ability to turn it off completely at the touch of a button.

My advise for Bombing the ETH with Towing EGT's a priority!

1. Install gauges EGT, Boost and Fuel (Lift Pump) pressure

2. Pe Comp w Boost Elbow (Supplied)

3. Large Exhaust and high flow air filter

And if you want more!:D

4. A hybrid hx35 Turbo and then Diesel Dynamics DD2 or DD3 injectors.

I noticed you had a 93 cummins...

The 24 valve is a bit different... the best mileage rpm range is 1800-2000rpm. Below or above, and your mileage will drop. A fact straight from Cummins. They even sent it out to all power Booster members in their newsletter about a year ago. Also, the power band they recommend is 2000-2250rpm.

With 4. 10s, I can tow at those RPMs, which is at a safe towing speed... not 70-75mph! (or 90-100mph like someone posted)

No one's mentioned it, but I too was looking for a little better "edge" whne pulling - so I installed the Power Shot 2000 propane injection system - at $399 delivered, it gives good power increase without sudden jolts or stress on the drivetrain - it gives better fuel mileage, frequently REDUCES EGT's, and can be switched on or off at will, so only used when needed. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for significant SAFE power at reasonable cost!

The Diesel Dynamics injectors are tested and balanced to be within 1 1/2%. The 275s are balanced to within 11%.

I have read the graphs on the DD webpage, but others have also dynoed these 275 injectors at more. I believe Joe Donnelly dynoed them on an ETH at 42HP. So did Sportbike on a thread a long time ago.

I had the 275s for a while, then changed to the DD3s. I am happy.

Gary, I have been looking at different Propane systems. Did you check around some? Why did you choose this system?

And what about the Tank? What kind and where did you mount.

I have checked around a little and a D. O. T. tank of 10 gal or more with mount runs several hundred dollars. Plus the remote fill!

Last question. Did the system come with hoses that run to the supply tank?

Thanks Kurt
