Mild power boost

I am looking for a mild (safe) power boost for my 2005 4x4, 6-spd quad cab. I am planning on dropping in a MBRP high flow muffler, an air box of some sort, maybe the new AFE intake elbow and a Smarty at 30 hp or so. Does that sound like a decent way to go? thanks

Smarty's the way to go for safe, mild, power. Intake and exhaust are a good idea, too. That way, if you decide to go more in the future (and you probably will), you already have that accomplished.

With a six speed, you're good with 60 or 90 hp with the Smarty.



No need for an intake unless you're pulling the filter minder down, or unless you're looking for the whistle.



Before adding any fuel, make sure to get gauges!

If you do not want to spend the money on a smarty, I bought a Quadzilla XZT and have been very happy with it. Extra power is great and I picked up some fuel economy!

I agree that the smarty has some neat features, but it should for that kind of money. Personally I think the best exhaust mod is the muffler eliminator. Sounds great, improves flow, no drone issues like a lot of people report with various muffler swaps. Instead of the cold air intake, consider the intake horn replacement. I have both but did the CFM+ intake horn first and the EGT drop and quicker spool up was immediately noticable. I had it with a swiss cheesed airbox at first. I went with the S&B after that and the main change there was the whistle For a fuelling box I went with the Quadzilla standard box. I think I got it new on ebay for around $350. The S&B is about $200, the muffler eliminator is around $150 installed, and the CFM+ around $250 I think. So I have under $1000 in it and it runs AWESOME. I can switch between 30/60 and 100hp levels on the fly which I like and use. It is something a downloader will not allow. I think I am modded up to the threshold of safe/pushing it:-laf No problems at all with 10k on the mods, 82k on the truck.

I just bought an '03 2500 Q-cab Longbed and want to get as much bang for my buck as possible (about $1000). I drive about 500 miles a week, so I need some help on fuel economy and need to be safe. It seems like the Smarty box is as safe as they get... how about fuel econ?

Some see an improvement with the smarty set low. I think it is pretty tough though since the extra power feels so good:-laf Maybe a different direction is to use new injector nozzles, like a 50 hp set from DDP. They claim a 2mpg improvement and I have seen posts here that substantiate nozzles as a power gain, EGT reduction and milage improvement. Those nozzles are about $850. I am pretty sure they will be my next mod.

I am saving for a Smarty currently... intent is to run on the mild side. I already have gauges, intake, and exhaust. Intent may change...

SMARTY all the way. . I have a stock 2005 (PSM Cold Air Kit),,, and Smarty on #1,,, this thing ROCKS! I am going to Sacramento raceway next week and will report back in with 1/4 times, ET. Last, the SMARTY plugs into the OBDII and the programing is straight forward, no learning curve and your DONE!

I'm on #9, have been for quite a while. I have a straight-piped stock exhaust and AFE PG7/Stage II.



I have to be careful with low RPMs in 5th and 6th but otherwise sweet Little smoky but need to find the cord so I can try the other downloads.

I cant believe how the Smarty wakes the motor up. I should have bought this a year ago...
